January 31 – Leviticus 18:21; “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God; I am the LORD”.

_____

The reason for understanding why Molech is important when witnessing to a Mormon is because they’ve changed its meaning.  Molek is found in Strong’s Concordance, # 4427-4432.  In the Hebrew it means the chief deity (king) or god of the Ammonites.

The ancient Ammonites, Canaanites and Phoenicians would sacrifice their children to him in lieu of favors or blessings.  Molech was an idol made of brass that was heated up from the lower regions of the statue.  With his outstretched arms, they would lay the child on the statue after it had become sufficiently heated enough to ensure death.  Priests from the cult would play drums and other musical instruments loudly so the parents couldn’t hear the screams coming from the child.  Also see Jeremiah 7:31; 32:35; Amos 5:26 and Lev. 20:2-5.

Joseph Smith chose to change names of people, places and things taken from the Bible, and inserted them into the Book of Mormon to purposefully trick members of the Church.  This keeps the members in a state of foggy confusion which in turn keeps them imprisoned in the lies of Mormonism.

Ask your Mormon friend or loved ones what they think of your findings.

January 30 – “Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.”  1 Timothy 1:4

_____

One of the most honored ways to attain true salvation in Mormonism is by performing works in the temples for the dead (usually your own relatives).  The best way to do this is by going to the genealogical library in Salt Lake City, UT.  There you will find literally millions of “pedigree charts” which are itemized lists of each relative and their vital stats which include date and place of birth, date and place of death, date of marriage and to whom, names and birthdates of children, et al.  For a monetary fee they can have these printed out and take with them to the temples to be baptized, endowed, sealed and married by proxy for their dead relatives.

This is how dead people become Mormons.

_____

D&C 124:28-40 tells the Mormons which buildings are to be used in order for them to be acceptable to the Lord.  If they perform works for their dead while not in the temples, the works are unacceptable to him.

January 29 – Jesus told us in Matthew 16:18; “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gate of hell shall not prevail against it”.

_____

We know we can trust and believe Him for all eternity because His word is infallible.  If we can’t even believe these words of His, how could we possibly believe in the resurrection?

_____

The Fourth book of Nephi tells of the beginning stages of a ‘great apostasy’ from the true church and the real Christ.  Mormons believe that it actually began even before the death of the original 12 apostles, thus the need for a ‘restored church’.

THE GREAT DEBATES

October 1988

October 2006

Late October 1988, Las Vegas, Nevada.  It was there, that a small group of people stood over a hole in the ground, watching as the tiny white casket which held its precious cargo was lowered into its final resting place.  The casket held a child of God that was serving a mission for the Lord and from the results of her funeral; many would come to know the saving power of Christ Jesus, His crucifixion and resurrection.

Of course the baby’s parents felt as bad as they looked on that cold autumn morning and the baby’s grandparents, a couple of uncles and a cousin stood by to support her grief-stricken  mom and dad.  Nothing anyone could say would make it better as far as her mom was concerned and as the sound of the bishop’s voice droned on, the thoughts of the childless new mother was not at her daughter’s graveside.

Within the first five minutes of the eulogy that cold morning Mallory’s mom frantically searched her memory bank of the Jesus she had heard about in her travels over the past six years.  What very little she did know wasn’t even close to what that bishop was proclaiming.

At the end of the graveside service the wind picked up as everyone walked back to their vehicles and the heartbroken mom turned to catch one more glimpse of her baby’s casket.  The mom and dad drove home in stunned silence for most of the twenty minute drive back to the apartment.  Little things were spoken between the two; “she sure had a lot of black curly hair” and “her nose looked just like…”  What was there to be said?  There was no baby, no help, no hope, no God to reach to and find comfort.  The only thing she left that graveyard with was the bishop’s voice telling her that she would never see her baby again because they hadn’t been married in the temple.  God would give Mallory to another family who was worthy of her.  That’s when the visual made its appearance and the bishop’s voice began to serve as noise in the background.

When he said the words “she’ll be given to another couple who is worthy of her because they have been married in the temple…” her mind instantly pictured a massive white building with little to no windows; the temple.  On the other side of the picture there stood a cross with blood that had been dripping from its owner that made the dust that caught the blood Holy ground.

Back at the apartment the young woman walked in her little home to be greeted by her own mother.  As they changed clothes and began making lunch the debate that had been at the tips of everyone’s tongues broke loose.

The younger mom said to the older mom; “…didn’t you hear what that guy said?  He told me that I was going to hell!”  The older mom shook her head and made a clicking noise with her tongue as she told her daughter that she had misunderstood the bishop.  The young, defiant woman knew differently; yet sadly enough neither she nor her husband even discussed the funeral until four years later.  However, for now the bishop’s quote of the Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith rang in her ears; “If parents are righteous, they will have their children after the resurrection. Little children who die, whose parents are not worthy of an exaltation, will be adopted into the families of those who are worthy.”

How was that to be misunderstood?  It seemed rather dry and pretty straightforward to her.  She wanted God, but didn’t know how to go about “getting” Him as she was too intimidated to visit another church.  She also didn’t know that the Holy, Merciful God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would bless the couple with two more daughters within the next four years and the greatest gift of all; their salvation!

I never could have imagined that eighteen years later I would be praising a righteous Sovereign God for the gift of Mallory Elizabeth Grim and be involved in yet another debate.  This time it would be in a Seattle Christian radio station with my husband and of course who else, but a couple of Mormons?!

The debate in that apartment has now lasted 18 years.  I’ve never counted how many times I’ve “debated” with my mother about that day so long ago.  She is just as convinced today that I misunderstood and I’m even more convinced I heard them correctly.  The divide is wide indeed, but Jesus warned us of these days.  He said there would be mothers against daughters and sons against fathers on account of His name.

It is almost surreal for me as I look back on that day in Vegas and think of what God has done for my family and for me too.  I never would have imagined that this is what I would be doing; yet now I cannot imagine not doing this work!  The debate at KGNW last week with Thor Tolo has blessed us beyond measure.  We can’t thank everyone enough for their prayers that went up for the event!  I’ve had people pray for me before when I speak or do a radio show, but in all honesty I have never experienced what I did this last week and the week prior to the taping of the show!  It was very obvious to those in the studio and to Kirk and me that God was present among us!

I noticed the “misunderstandings” and topics between the debate last week and the debate 18 years ago were very similar.  They both contained the following subjects:  absence of the cross, no assurance of salvation and good works.  The most striking similarity was the emptiness in my heart while I wondered why; both then and now.  Why is it they won’t even stop to give it (the truth) the slightest of consideration?  What bad thing could it bring upon you to just consider the possibility that there may be some truth in what we (non-Mormons; Christians) proclaim?

Mallory wasn’t the only “thing” I buried that day in 1988.  Before I got up from my chair at that gravesite I recall looking down into the grave and picturing myself placing my heritage down there as well.  I knew on that day my ignorant, misinformed perception of “my people” was over and done with.

One of the first things Thor asked me at the debate was to explain why I believe the Mormons are not Christians.  I told him the main reason is because of the cross.  In Mormonism there is no cross in the sense of it being the altar of God.  Once again, it’s about the cross, or rather the lack thereof.  The sign of the empty cross doesn’t just imply, but shouts out the good news of our salvation and resurrection!  On the flip side you see the Mormon parents at their child’s funeral.  All that is offered is the hope of going to the temple a year later to work for salvation of the child and the parent; no mention of a cross in that scenario.

When Thor asked Stake President Burnham if he had assurance of his salvation, he replied; “Well now you’re testing my humility”.  Oh please.   I knew he wouldn’t be able to proclaim any good news of rest for his own soul, assurance that the Shepherd is always with him to lead, console and keep watch over His flock.  There is no hope when you are working all the time for your own life.  How are you rejuvenated, fed, rested and refreshed?  You can’t be if you are the one that is always in control.  It took me years to disencumber myself of the filthy robe of self-sufficiency.  I felt much like what the apostle Paul described in Romans chapter seven; “why do I do the things I don’t want to do but don’t do the things I want to do”?  The only way my life got into order is when I got off the merry-go-round of doing good works for my salvation.  Even to this day, how could I be sure if it (salvation) was based on my own worthiness?  This week and last week I’ve worked pretty hard.  Next week I might get distracted or maybe take it easy.  How do I justify myself in God’s eyes with this type of spiritual battle going on inside my soul?

As mentioned earlier, we have been so blessed by seeing God at work in people’s lives.  It’s been nothing short of an honor to watch His grace flow to those around us!  We’re sending out this praise and prayer report so you can be blessed as well!  Continue to pray won’t you that those who are struggling with their decision to either join or leave the Church would be made through the will of the true God of the Bible?  And pray for us as we help the people in their decisions so that we would only be focused on Him and our reasons for doing this!

Mr. Burnham e-mailed Kirk and me a couple of days after the debate to let us know that he had researched our claim about the false prophecy of Oliver Granger.  We’ll be posting that on the site this week.  He wanted us to be sure to let everyone know that indeed the prophecy did come true.  He (Burnham) found some letters that were written by Granger’s descendants describing their grandfather and what he had done for the Church.  As we stated on the show, it didn’t come to pass.  This brings us to a little project.  We’re asking everyone to let us know; have you ever heard of Oliver Granger?  We’ll be posting our findings on the site at the end of the month!

You can download and listen to the debate by clicking on the links below. Each file is approximately 9 MB.  These take you to the website of KGNW and the Live From Seattle Show.

Hour 3:

Praise!  We cannot give too many details for privacy reasons, however, someone here in the Puget Sound Community, ex-Mormon, accepted the true Lord Jesus into “their” heart as Lord and Savior because of the debate!  All we can say is “Praise God!”

We’ve been in touch several times with a very nice lady who listened to KGNW the Monday after the show (Thor actually had me do the program w/ him impromptu).  I was able to pray for a woman whose daughter is thinking of joining the Church.  Daughter’s name is Lauren, 18, freshman at University of Washington.  Lauren needs to be introduced to good Christian kids on campus.

I (Michelle) received several e-mails from members of the Church who believe that I am totally wrong about my claims in regards to the lack of the cross and want for me to issue a public apology for my statements on KGNW.  My answer…no.

Praise!  An ex-Mormon Christian listening to the debate wrote in to volunteer to help us at the ministry!

Praise!   We have a volunteer for translating our tracts from English into Spanish!  Because the Lord provided so quickly and abundantly on this I’m going to be confident in asking my next request!  If you speak a language other than English or Spanish and would like to see tracts printed in that language and would be willing to translate them for us, let us know!

Praise!  We received many requests for mentoring packets.  The new outlines are going to print this week, if you’re interested in an expanded, updated version (80 pgs.), don’t forget to send an e-mail to michelle@lifeafter.org to let me know!  We’re requesting $3.00 for s+h for postage.

Prayer and Praise!  A 40+ year old mentally disabled man contacted Life After about a week before the debate.  He was a convert in the LDS Church and was active for approximately seven years.  He felt the Lord tell him two months ago to leave the Church because they weren’t Christian.  Ironically enough, Michael, ended up attending my church.  He then was listening to the radio, heard the debate and called our ministry line.  To make things even more confusing for him, Mr. Burnham (from the debate) is Michael’s Stake President.  Various members of his ward are harassing him at the stores, etc., in the town they live.  I am confident you’ll know how to pray!  J   This isn’t the first time I’ve had to deal with the Church and mentally impaired members who want out.

Jeff Burnham – Stake President at debate.

Doug Crandall – Jeff’s neighbor and fellow Mormon at debate.

We thank each and every one of you for praying for us and the ministry.  We couldn’t do this without you!  May God bless you and our warmest greetings go out to you as you celebrate this upcoming Thanksgiving!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle Grim

Quote of the month from the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 156; “O ye Twelve! and all Saints! profit by this important Key—that in all your trials, troubles, temptations, afflictions, bonds, imprisonments and death, see to it, that you do not betray heaven; that you do not betray Jesus Christ; that you do not betray the brethren; that you do not betray the revelations of God, whether in Bible, Book of Mormon, or Doctrine and Covenants, or any other that ever was or ever will be given and revealed unto man in this world or that which is to come. Yea, in all your kicking and flounderings, see to it that you do not this thing, lest innocent blood be found upon your skirts, and you go down to hell. All other sins are not to be compared to sinning against the Holy Ghost, and proving a traitor to the brethren.

Joseph Smith’s Character

Will the Real Joseph Smith Please Stand Up?

 By Mark Grote 2004

Born on December 23, 1805, Joseph Smith could run faster, throw farther and jump higher than the other kids in Sharon, Vermont. If you tour the sites in Nauvoo, IL., the place of his death, that’s what you’ll hear of Joseph Smith as you move about the historical landmarks.

But if you are interested in facts, instead of legends, you might find yourself questioning whether it’s a good idea to put your eternity in the hands and beliefs of this man.

Born to Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith, Joseph Smith Jr. grew up on a series of tenant farms in Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York. Though in his youth Joseph was largely deprived of a formal education, he was adequately “instructed in reading, writing, and the ground rules of arithmetic.” 1 Joseph’s mother said that he was often “given to meditation and deep study.” 2 It also widely known that Joseph Smith was “nimble-witted, ambitious, and gifted with a boundless imagination, he dreamed of escape into an illustrious and affluent future.”  3 Joseph Smith could always tell stories with amazing detail of ancient civilizations.

According to the church, affected by the the religious movement taking place around his home in Manchester, New York, in 1820, fourteen-year-old Joseph (depending on which account you believe) was determined to know which of the many religions he should join. He encountered a passage in the Bible instructing any who lacked wisdom to “ask of God” (James 1:5).

Early one morning in the spring of 1820, it said that Joseph went to secluded woods to ask God which church he should join. According to his account, while praying Joseph claims he was visited by two “personages” who identified themselves as God the Father and Jesus Christ.

He was told not to join any of the churches. “Oddly enough, there is no mention of this “vision” in the early Mormon church records and the Improvement Era admits: “Joseph Smith’s ‘official’ account of his first vision and the visits of the angel Moroni was…first published in the Times and Seasons in 1842.”4 For such a dramatic event such as this in one’s life, you would think the person would be changed profoundly by the events and that they would be in the forefront of his mind. But Joseph Smith didn’t give an account of the vision before 1842.  Why not?

Jesus said in the Bible that He would only return in the fullness of Glory that would be visible from one end of the sky to the other, and God told Moses that ”no one can see Him and live” [italics added], indicates more biblical evidence that Joseph Smith lied about this encounter with God, because God is unchanging and not a liar.  Either Joseph Smith lied or God did.  Who do you believe?

Despite the obvious differences with scripture, people still wanted to believe Joseph Smith because they wanted to know God was real. It is no surprise that, in 1823, that Joseph Smith was visited by another spirit, this time by an angel named Moroni (some accounts say THIS was Joseph’s first vision), who told him of an ancient record containing God’s dealings with the former inhabitants of the American continent that just happened to be buried a short walk from his home in Palmyra, NY. In 1827, Joseph supposedly retrieved this record, inscribed on thin golden plates, although weighing in excess of 250 pounds each, and shortly afterward began translating its words by the “gift of God.”4

A gift so great, that it contained many grammatical errors.  Apparently, God was so busy creating the earth in six days, He didn’t have time to brush up on his grammar skills.  The resulting manuscript, the Book of Mormon, was published in March 1830. On April 6, 1830, Joseph Smith organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and became its first president and High Priest of the Melchizedek.

Now, if you read Mormon literature, you’ll read “Joseph married Emma Hale on January 18, 1827, and was described as a loving and devoted husband. They had eleven children (two adopted), only five of whom lived past infancy. During the thirty-nine years of his life, Joseph established thriving cities in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois; produced volumes of scripture; sent missionaries throughout the world; orchestrated the building of temples; served as mayor of Nauvoo, one of the largest cities in Illinois, and as general of its militia, the Nauvoo Legion; and was a candidate for the presidency of the United States.” Wow! That’s very impressive.

You won’t read, however, that Joseph Smith was also into mysticisms and Masonic practices, was a reader of seer stones, and was a money-digger who engaged in fortune telling. In addition to the militia he formed, what you won’t hear that it was against the law.  You won’t hear that he destroyed a printing press. You won’t hear that he burned down the building that it was in.  You won’t hear that he shot and killed two men with a gun he had smuggled into the jail. And you won’t hear that he had more than 30 wives.

Smith was a controversial figure in American history because of his bizarre and unbiblical interpretations such as polygamy— and was as much beloved by his followers as he was hated by his detractors. One thing that Mormons do not talk much about are the facts surrounding Joseph Smith’s arrest. In what some would call terrorism today, Joseph Smith destroyed a printing press and burned down the building around it after some of Smith’s critics printed things about Smith and the Church in a publication called the Nauvoo ExpositorApparently, the truth hurts. As one might expect, Joseph was persecuted much of his adult life for his unbiblical beliefs and was killed along with his brother Hyrum by a mob in Carthage, Illinois, on June 27, 1844, following the uprising surrounding the destruction of the press, the destruction of the building and, candidly speaking, the destruction of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Now, considering the monument events of above, you would think that they would profoundly impact a person for every thought, action or plan that one might endeavor to take on.  Not so for Joseph Smith.  Consider these facts:

Mormon apostle and leader, David O. McKay once stated: “The appearing of the Father and Son to Joseph Smith is the foundation of the church.” Got that?  The foundation of the church.

According to John Widstoe, another Mormon apostle, The First vision of 1820 is of first importance in the history of Joseph Smith. Upon its reality rests the trust and value of the his subsequent work.”

Let’s examine these dates of significance in light of the above quotes.

1820 – The Mormon Church’s official date when Joseph Smith supposedly had his first vision.  He was 14. His vision was a visit of the Father and Son together, separate, standing in the air, talking to him.

1829 - The Book of Mormon is published.
1829
– Joseph Smith enters the priesthood when he and Oliver Cowdery are visited, this time by James, Peter and John.
1830 – The Mormon Church is established.
1832 – Joseph Smith gives prophecy that no man can see the face of God without being in the priesthood.  So how did he see the Father in 1820 when, by his own admission, he was not in the priesthood?  Or is the “Priesthood” prophesy false?  Which is it?
1834 – Oliver Cowdery, assisted by Joseph Smith, recounts in the Messenger and Advocate, published in Sept. 1834, that the first vision actually came in 1823.  Joseph Smith would have been 17 instead of 14 as told by the church.
1842*
– Joseph Smith publishes his ‘official’ account  of his first vision in the publication Times and Seasons.
1844 – Brigham Young takes over control of the Mormom Church after the murder of Joseph Smith.  Young had 363 sermons published in the inspired Journal of Discourses.  Never once does he mention the first vision upon which the foundation of the church is set.
1820-1850 - Numerous publications describe the first vision as Joseph being visited by the angel, Moroni.
1851 - Mormon publication of the first edition of the Pearl of Great Price reveals it was actually the angel, Nephi, that Joseph Smith actually saw in 1820, contrary to all other Mormon publications that previously said it was Moroni.  This is quite troubling.  Was is it God the Father and Son, the angel Moroni or the Angel Nephi?  And how did we get from two visitors to one?
1853 – Joseph Smith’s mother, after Smith’s death, wrote in her biographical Sketches, confirming it was, Nephi, that Joseph Smith saw.

The book of Mormon is published in 1830, 10 years after the so-called First Vision, yet the 1820 vision upon which the Church if founded is not officially given until 1842?

Only one conclusion can be drawn from these events, which are backed up by facts and reliable sources including the Mormon Church’s own historical records, and that is that Joseph Smith was a false prophet, money-digger and lying manipulator of people of the worst kind.  Please, do not put your trust and eternity into the hands of Joseph Smith.  Jesus Christ said, “I am the truth, the way and the life, no man goes to the Father but by way of the Son.”   Jesus is all you need.  No church, belief in no prophet is required.

Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “Today you’ll be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:42-43). Instant, FULL Salvation!  No works, no church, no baptism, nothing but faith.6 The Greek word for “paradise,” that Jesus uses in Luke 23:43, is paradeisos, the same word in the Greek that Paul uses in 2 Cor. 12:4 to describe the third heaven that Mormons use to explain the “three degrees of glory” doctrine.  Paul says in 2 Cor. 12:2-4:

I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

You can see that Paul refers to the third heaven as “paradise.”  Closer examination of the word, paradeisos, the same word that Jesus said to the thief.  How can you reconcile this, my Mormon friends? This passage clearly contradicts Mormon teachings about heaven and how to get there. Paul goes on in the passage to reveal that it was himself who was caught up into paradise, the  third heaven, where Jesus took the saved thief.

Even if one was to put the “three degrees of glory” doctrine aside, the thief is still a problem for Mormon apologists.  There simply is not enough exegesis (reading out of the bible) to explain the Mormon position that the thief, a lying cheat and swindler who lived a life of reprobate, could never be in the third heaven with Jesus. By the Mormon Church’s own doctrine and admission, you need to be a member of the “true church,” their church, be baptized and married and having performed many works (how many?…no Mormon for nearly 200 years can tell you), in order to go to the third heaven after you die.  Yet, here we see Jesus and Paul, clearly describing the same heaven in the bible’s original language, paradeisos (meaning no misinterpretations here), the same heaven that will have the thief there.  You see my Mormon friends, there is but one way to heaven, and that is Jesus.  Confess your sins to Him, pray to Him, read His word, the holy bible, and KNOW you are saved (1 John 5:13).

* Note: 22 years went by before Joseph Smith published his account of the first vision upon which, according to McKay, “is the foundation of the church.”  If it was so significant, why did it not appear in the Book of Mormon?

Oaths & Loyalty

Loyalty can be a noble thing in life.  There are a number of causes we can be loyal to and as Christians we all know that the loyalty of Jesus’ love for us knows no bounds.  But what about mankind; where’s the line of being loyal and the line of blind obedience which can lead to destruction?

My family and I watched a movie this past week about Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  He was a German pastor and theologian who helped secure freedom for Jews from 1939 to the time of his imprisonment in 1943.

The short film about Bonhoeffer, Agent of Grace, is just one of a handful of movies released about Hitler.   Each begs the question of what the difference is between loyalty and blind obedience.  How could something like the Holocaust happen and why didn’t anyone question their moral conscience when swearing allegiance to Hitler?  Every member of the German armed forces swore an oath of allegiance to Hitler.  Notice it wasn’t to the country or the constitution of Germany, but to Hitler.  They oath each member took is as follows:

“The Wehrmacht Oath of Loyalty to Adolf Hitler, 2 August 1934

“I swear by God this sacred oath that I shall render unconditional obedience to Adolf Hitler, the Führer of the German Reich, supreme commander of the armed forces, and that I shall at all times be prepared, as a brave soldier, to give my life for this oath.”” (1)

Compare the above information with the oaths of personal allegiance to the constitution of the United States that is taken by each member of the American Armed Forces:

“I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”  (2)

As you can see, the evidence of where the loyalties of these two militaries lie is abundantly clear.  The American military vows to protect our land and Hitler demanded unfettered loyalty to him.  This is a classic example of how blind obedience leads to tragedy.

Now while loyalty to your family or friends is commendable, we still have to ask; how far is too far?  Seeing the film on Bonhoeffer reminded me of the oaths Mormons will take each time they go to temple or even the oaths they take towards their own souls when “bearing their testimonies”.  As you well know the testimony of a Mormon is eerily similar to each other.  The same words and phrases are used to define their individual commitment and adoration towards the Church, Jesus, the Book of Mormon and lest we forget; Joseph Smith.

Let me make something very clear before I proceed any further.  I do not believe that Mormons behave like Nazis.  I do not equate Hitler to any past, present or future prophet of the LDS Church.  The reason I use the analogy is to show how blind obedience to a person and/or system is a dangerous behavior.

     While some of the words a Mormon will use in their testimonies are in a different order, the main theme runs throughout each.  This is typically what you’ll hear;

“I know the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on the face of the earth.  I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God.  I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and I know that the current president (right now it’s Monson) is a true prophet of God.  I know that Christ is the Messiah who died for me and was resurrected on the 3rd day…”

On the LDS Church News website I found a section that gives instructions for members to teach their children how to “bear their testimonies”.  (3)  According to this site “testimony language is different from talking about God”.  Huh?

The site tells the reader they should teach children what to bear testimony of; Christ, Joseph and the Book of Mormon.  It then tells them to practice at home in informal settings.

First of all, why would there be such a thing as “testimony language”?  Secondly, why should you be taught to “bear testimony of the Church, the prophet Joseph”, etc.?  A testimony is a declaration of your faith, or a statement you give while under oath in a court setting to tell what you know of a certain situation.  It’s a statement about something you know to be true in your personal experience.

Thirdly, it says to tell the children that their testimonies will grow.  Isn’t this a given?  I mean why would you tell somebody what to say about the personal things they already know? Why is it they have to be dictated to regarding how they share their own experiences?  This is manipulative

Kirk and I traveled extensively throughout Europe when we lived there in the mid eighties and I’ve often said the one place that reminded me most of Utah was East Berlin.  The tones of the people’s voices and the emptiness in their eyes spoke volumes to me.  It was obvious to all that the presence of communism had taken its toll.

Throughout all our travels Kirk and I met a lot of people and ironically the one thing that attracted me to the Christians was their testimonies.  Each person had their unique story, but each fact they shared with me about Jesus was the same.  He loves me, He died for me and He was God incarnate.  Those were the only similarities existent in their “testimonies”.  No one practiced it before they met me and then recited something by rote, yet the vocabulary they spontaneously used radiated their devotion for Christ Jesus.

The US military gathers their new recruits together and they pledge to obey so that the forces stay strong.  Hitler did this to another extreme to ensure that everyone did just as they were told at all times so that he could someday rule the world much like the Romans did.  What purpose does it serve for everyone to have similar testimonies, other than to control the masses?

Can you just imagine what the Apostle Paul would’ve said?  How would he talk about Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon?  What do you think his testimony is like up in heaven?  With the utter devotion he portrayed to Jesus in his writings, where would Joseph or Monson fit in?  If we’re so busy talking about Smith, Hinckley and/or Monson then honestly, where in your testimony does Jesus fit?

     To show what I mean about their devotion to Smith take a look at what it says in Joseph Smith:  The Choice Seer, Part III, Chapter 25;

“The accumulation of all scholarly knowledge in the earth’s history of events past or the projection of things future will yet pale into embarrassed silence when compared with the knowledge granted us through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Such things stand as a third great evidence of his prophetic calling.”

      Just think…even Moses and Isaiah, not to mention Jesus’ knowledge, will “pale in embarrassed silence” when compared to the third grade education of good ol’ Joe.  Now in light of this let’s see one of the reasons they say we should trust the prophet Joseph Smith.  Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, pg. 67;

“GREATNESS OF JOSEPH SMITH. I look upon Joseph Smith as the greatest prophet that ever breathed the breath of life, excepting Jesus Christ. Father Adam, as I have said, stands at the head; but Joseph Smith was reserved to lay the foundation of this great kingdom and dispensation of salvation to the whole human family in these last days, to build up Zion, to establish God’s kingdom, and to prepare it for the coming of the Son of Man.”

      Again, unfettered loyalty to a man is a dangerous thing.  It has the potential of great destruction either to one person or a whole society.  Yet they have the examples listed above on where to direct their loyalty to and even receive other examples from the pulpits of their schools.  At Brigham Young University, the apostle Dallin Oaks said this at the CES Doctrine and Covenants Symposium;

”Our individual, personal testimonies are based on the witness of the Spirit, not on any combination or accumulation of historical facts. If we are so grounded, no alteration of historical facts can shake our testimonies.” (“1985 CES Doctrine and Covenants Symposium,” Brigham Young University, Aug. 16, 1985, page 26)

The point is this; on whom or what do you lay your devotion?  Making public oaths is a serious business and shouldn’t be taken lightly, yet this is what each and every Mormon does when they bear their testimonies to what they falsely believe is truth.  For the Mormon the oath is made to not only Joseph Smith, but to all prophets in the Church, the Book of Mormon and the Church itself.  Jesus ends up being a mere sideline attribute.  The pressure of believing all this is tremendous as they’re promised suffering for any incompliance.

     For example, there is a list of protocols called “The Fourteen Fundamentals of Following Our Prophets”.  The complete list will be posted at the end of this article but the last item is what caught my attention.  It says;

“The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

Now tell me how this is inspired?  Where in the Bible did Jesus ever tell us to follow mankind and manmade institutions in this manner?

Pray with us won’t you?  Pray for each and every member of the LDS Church to indeed have a personal revelation and testimony as to the truth of this false church and the truth of the One True God, Christ Jesus.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle …

Liahona June 1981, pg. 1, Ezra Taft Benson, “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet

(Address given Tuesday, February 26, 1980 at Brigham Young University); “In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.”

 1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.

2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.

3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.

4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.

5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.

6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.

7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.

8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.

9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.

10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.

11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.

12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.

13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.

14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

May God bless us all to look to the Prophet and the Presidency in the critical and crucial days ahead is my prayer.”

KJV Only or Not?

Matthew 10:16; “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” – Geneva Study Bible

Around 1999 I wrote an article for the Saints Alive newsletter when I worked for Ed Decker at the ministry.  From the time Ed opened the doors of SA until that day he had published his newsletters in KJV only.

Ed had asked me for an article, so I wrote it and sent it in to him.  What I hadn’t paid attention to was that I quoted scripture from my NASB (New American Standard Bible).  Ed prayed before he sent it to the printers and the Lord told him to send it as is.

Within a day of sending out the newsletters we began reaping what we had sown.  We lost many of our supporters, but then gained others.  Ed’s response in the following newsletter taught me how God works.  He called me into his office as our phones began ringing and said he agreed with me in Bible translations and that God speaks in all languages.  Now I can’t speak for Ed; only Ed can do that, but I do know his personal choice of bible translations is the NKJV.

As I sit here more than a decade later I am facing the same topic but in a different venue.  So let me say this about the KJV only issue.

I have chosen to publish the website with KJV references because that is what the Mormon people use as their Bible.  I like the KJV and refer to it often during my personal study times during each day.  It’s a beautiful Bible and I enjoy it immensely.  I also employ and rely upon Strong’s Concordance and English dictionaries.  The Bible I personally use every day and carry with me to church every Sunday is the NASB.

I use study tools from Oswald Chambers, Charles Spurgeon, John Calvin, Charles Stanley, Chip Thompson, J. Vernon McGee, Martin Luther, Adrian Rogers, Walter Martin, Moody and the list goes on!

I am totally convinced God Almighty speaks other languages in addition to 1611 English.  I am reminded of it each day as I study His words in my NASB and when I receive my web-tracking report on how many people have used the Alta Vista Babelfish program we’ve installed on our website.  People from every nation have visited our website and used the translation tool.

As you can imagine and know for yourselves, there are also countless Bibles written which are blasphemous and not worthy of mention.  I have gone throughout the last seventeen years by proving that which is good, honorable and worthy of praise.  If it does not line up with what God says and coincides with His intent then I will be the first to run the other way.  And while I am not a theologian nor am I a language expert, I can’t for the life of me understand the divisiveness in the KJV issue that seems to plague us as Christians in the English speaking nations.

I am certain God speaks to the people from Sai Pan or Guam in the Mariana Islands through their Chamorro bibles and to the people in Hernhut, Germany in their German bibles.

I am comforted in knowing He has spoken to the Kenyans from their Ekegusii Bibles as they write in to thank us for having the courage to publish our website.

I’m reminded of God’s omniscience every time I look at the pictures my daughter Jacqui brought back with her from the two month mission trip she took to Ethiopia.  They handed out Bibles in Amharic, served hundreds of people and led many to the Lord.  We are also grateful for the opportunity Jacqui had in southwestern Ethiopia sharing the gospel with the Kara tribe on the Omo River.

I’m reminded of His omnipotence when I hear from my dear Portuguese pastor friend named Luiz.

I am humbled beyond words when I read my ancestor’s Welsh Bible knowing that not all of them were tricked by the likes of Joseph Smith and his teachings.

I’m reminded of how blessed I am by knowing John Johnson who is a Nepali  national and got saved on a mountain top in Nepal while praying to a Hindu god.  He now works for the American Bible Society and translates the Bible from the original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic into two different Hindi languages.

I know God’s overwhelming love for HIV infected Fisya and Yeshi, the children Kirk and I sponsor through World Vision in Ethiopia and live hundreds of kilometers from each other and speak different languages.

I am filled with awe each time my youngest daughter Axi returns from a mission trip to Bohol, Philippines.  They share the gospel at the schools of deaf children in the poorest part of the Philippines and have seen many children accept Christ Jesus through the Bibles in their native tongue – Pilipino.

I am grateful to Him who supplies our every need in being able to sponsor little Mario in Los Cedros, Nicaragua.  Our church adopted an entire town and has sent our own members who are doctors, teachers and engineers to help them build homes, a health center and schools.  The Bible he reads is in Spanish.

I still can’t believe Jesus allowed me to live next door to the Kim family who moved here from Korea.  Pastor Shin and his family now live in Minneapolis as he is a translator for IHOP (International House of Prayer).  And yes, their Bible is in Korean and yes, they also know the One True God.

I stand in awe and have learned so much about Him through my friend Daniel who is a Messianic Jewish believer and director of Chosen People Ministries in London.  His Bible is in Hebrew.

I pray daily for the missionaries who hosted a booth next to ours at Seattle Missionsfest.  They distribute bibles throughout the poorest tribes of Africa to the tribal elders.  The Bibles are picture bibles.  They go out and teach the gospel to the tribal fathers and elders and they in turn teach the gospel to their tribesmen.

I am often reminded of God’s omnipresence when I think of my friends who live here in Seattle but are from Paraguay.  Eleanor’s grandmother escaped the horrible regime of Stalin in Russia only to be put into prison by Hitler’s henchmen while escaping through Germany.  The family finally made it to Paraguay and then immigrated here to the states.  The grandmother taught all her children and grandchildren how to read and speak several languages so they could read the Bible wherever they were living.  Russian, German, Spanish and English is spoken by all of the family members.  Their personal favorite Bible is in German.

They used it while serving missions in China and personally delivered pages from the Chinese Bible to those in their home churches.

I will always be learning something new about God from my dear, dear friends Jean Boardman and her late husband Bob.  Bob got his throat box and part of his right hand shot off during WW2. He then turned around to serve God with his new bride and to raise his family in the very place he got shot during the war just to minister to the Japanese people in Okinawa.  Every one of the people he encountered during those thirty two years used their Japanese Bibles not printed in KJV English.

Now I am just one little person living in the outskirts of Seattle.  I’m not famous, I’m not a language expert, and I’m not a heretic, of this I am sure.  I also know that God has allowed me to meet all the people I’ve mentioned for a certain purpose.  After my experience with Ed at Saints Alive and with all the people God has introduced me to, I know what that purpose is.

God is not a respecter of persons.  He looks upon all of us the same and sees us as His children when we are washed with His Son’s precious, holy blood.  He told us in His word that it wouldn’t return void in Isaiah 55:11 and His word is pure in Proverbs 30:5.  He also told us His word would endure forever in Isaiah 40:8 and Jesus Himself said not one jot or tittle would pass away until all was fulfilled – Matthew 5:18.

I don’t know about you but I believe what He’s saying.  I also know there are indeed some horrible bible translations and it’s your job as a Christian to stay away from those things not from God.  However, to arbitrarily throw out all Bible translations but one in 1611 English just doesn’t seem rational.

This line of thinking is saying that God is not able to produce any other human being with the talent or desire to keep His word pure.  If God can’t do that maybe God can’t ensure the gates of hell won’t prevail against His church as He promised in Matthew 16:18 or maybe God can’t provide good pastors for his flocks.  Are God’s arms strong enough to hold a grieving mother through His words on a page?  What about the man who was just furloughed from his job?  What about my dear friend Jean Boardman who lost her husband and best friend Bob after 55 years of marriage?

I would also suggest to the reader to take a look at the attitude of some that is attached to the KJV only issue.  Some, not all, of the proponents of this theory are almost rabid in their approach with this.  If it’s truly the only way we can hear from God, then why the ferocious defensiveness?  I’ve come to the realization that Jesus is a big God; He doesn’t need people with a bad attitude to spread His good news.

There are even websites and ministries out there with the KJV only theory that also condemns Strong’s Concordances, the Matthew Henry Commentary, Brown, Driver and Briggs, as well as many other very reputable dictionaries, commentaries and concordances.  One went so far as to condemn these and “all Greek and Hebrew Study Tools and Interlinears”.

My question for the latter example is why should we even trust your books if every dictionary is condemned?  What makes this particular insight the only way?  As I’ve stated many times before – I did that for thirty years with an organization who thought they held the only truth.  I hadn’t even heard of Palm Sunday until I got saved on that very day.  I was always taught other people “knew better”.  Really?

I hope you’d think about this – heavily.  If we’re to condemn all Greek and Hebrew Study tools then how are we to gain a deeper understanding of Him?  Why wouldn’t God provide reputable scholars?  Why are they all to be condemned?  The Catholic Church pulled this off for over a thousand years.  They didn’t want the truth of God to be handled by the average, every day person so they burned the translators and publishers of His word.

We should be praising God every day for His gift of Tyndale, Wycliffe, Hus, Knox and Luther to name a few.  I have to wonder if they’d be condemned under the same pen used by today’s critics…

The goal of this article isn’t to be divisive.  It’s to encourage people to think things through.  Know that there are indeed bad translations and bad people in this world who are intentionally out to trick God’s people.  Then there are those who’ve been misinformed who go about misinforming others.  Test the spirits as John warned us to do and follow Him – all the way to Jerusalem.

I’ve listed three verses from different versions of the Bible – see for yourself what you think.

 Matthew 28:18-20 –

NASB – “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

KJV – “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

ESV –“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

RSV/ASV – “And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”

Amplified Bible – “Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be).”

Isaiah 40:8 –

NASB – “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God

stands forever.”

KJV – “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God

shall stand for ever.”

ESV – “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”

RSV/ASV – “The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever.”

Amplified Bible – “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”

 Matthew 5:18 –

NASB – “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not

the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

KJV – “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or

One tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

ESV – “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

RSV/ASV – “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.”

Amplified Bible – “For truly I tell you, until the sky and earth pass away and perish, not one smallest letter nor one little hook [identifying certain Hebrew letters] will pass from the Law until all things [it foreshadows] are accomplished.”

Baptisms for the Dead

The following paragraph about the practice of baptizing the dead was taken from Jefflindsey.com, an LDS ”apologetic” website–if there is such a thing.  It shows how Mormons helplessly try to explain the practice of baptizing the dead:

“Baptism for the dead is a powerful evidence that Joseph Smith was a real prophet and the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored. The LDS practice has long been derided as absolute fiction and an abomination, and based on a terrible mis-interpretation of 1 Cor.15:29. However, long after Joseph Smith restored the practice through revelation, dozens of ancient documents have turned up showing that early Christians (at least some) indeed believed in and practiced baptism for the dead much as we do today. “

I am always glad to see the appearance of the phrase “through revelation” because it usually means that all other Mormon explanations have been exhausted leaving only ”we do what we want through revelation.”

If there’s a part of scripture that best illustrates how Mormons twist the word of God, this is it.  We have always maintained that Mormons are great basing an entire belief system upon one or two verses of scripture.  This is a well known fact amongst those of us who work in the field of counter-cult ministries.  The LDS Church is no exception to this rule, although they would vehemently deny the allegations.  There is literally one verse that talks about baptism for the dead and this is what the Mormon Church has put their minds on to set a standard of a dead work for their god.  It is found in 1 Corinthians 15:29 and it says; ‘Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?’

The key to understanding scripture is to read all things in context before you apply it to any teaching.  The first half of 1 Corinthians 15 is speaking about the absurdity of not believing in the resurrection of the dead.  Paul gave examples of those who had witnessed Jesus’ resurrection and then went on to explain that baptizing for dead people was even more absurd if they didn’t believe in the resurrection.  The uniqueness of Christianity lies in the resurrection of the dead.  For whatever reasons, the Corinthian church believed they needed to perform this proxy for the dead and Paul was there to set them straight.

Joseph Smith is quoted in the book Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 179 as follows; ‘The Saints have the privilege of being baptized for those of their relatives who are dead, whom they believe would have embraced the Gospel, if they had been privileged with hearing it, and who have received the Gospel in the spirit, through the instrumentality of those who have been commissioned to preach to them while in prison.’

Several questions arise in my mind when I read this thought process of Smith’s.  First of all, how does one know if their dead relative got the chance to hear the gospel in spirit prison?  Secondly, how could someone ever presume that their dead relative would even accept the gospel? Third, if, as many Mormon leaders teach today, that all people will be caught up in the first two levels of heaven regardless of whether they’re Mormon believer or not (i.e. they deny the concept of hell), then what is the point of baptizing the dead? Aren’t we all already going to heaven?

Let’s look at the exact passage in scripture:

 1 Cor. 15: 29

“Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?” KJV.

Just to gather some meaning here, let’s read the same verse from the NLV to get a better understanding:

“What good will it do people if they are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised, why are people baptized for them?”

Mormon “apologists” put all their reasoning behind the word “they,” in 1 Cor. 15:29, as if to imply that since Paul said “they” in referring to his fellow apostles in the early part of the chapter, that he means to attribute “they” to [the apostles’] practices later in the chapter as well.

We cannot build a doctrine based on that.  We need more.  We need to know what is biblical and what is not, based on the entire bible. Since God is not a God of confusion, He tells us what is His ways and what is not.  We know that when we see things mentioned in the bible, as in God’s law in the Old Testament, we also saw it in practice in the scriptures as well.  Paul talks about living a life for Christ numerous times in the New Testament and we see many characters in the Gospels doing just that. We also see what Paul wrote to the Churches in Ephesus, Corinth and others, yet again, we see it put into practice in Acts. We also know that the Church of Corinth was a church that was practicing some strange rituals.  They had lost their way and Paul’s letter was sent to correct that.  That alone should make us suspicious and cause us to question his motives for mentioning baptisms for the dead—if the context to the chapter were not obvious already.

But let’s look at this from one other angle.  Doesn’t it seem reasonable that if baptisms for the dead were truly God’s way, then it’s a significant thing?  Forgetting or not baptizing the dead as the Mormon’s teach would cost someone their salvation, or so we’re led to believe by LDS doctrine.  That’s an incredible statement if true!  If it were a practice of the early church, and a teaching of Jesus Christ that Paul taught as well, shouldn’t it have appeared somewhere else in scripture?  Perhaps Paul just wasn’t that concerned about the dead. And perhaps Jesus had better things to do.

Again, I cannot over emphasize this.  The idea of baptizing the dead so that people could be resurrected who would otherwise be lost for all eternity is a rather astonishing idea.  And there is much to be lost if the Church has failed to practice this exercise. Were it not the pagan ritual that it is, then we should have seen it put into practice by the early church. The book of Acts gave us many examples to follow, preaching, baptism, and laying on of hands, to name a few.

I was baptized for the dead on several occasions in the Ogden Temple while I was growing up as a Mormon in Utah. I remember thinking I had never heard of any of the people I was baptized for so I was unable to say if those people accepted the gospel.  Each time I went to do my proxy work I wondered if what I was doing was in vain.  I prayed that with all my hard work to stay holy and pure to get in the temple wouldn’t be for nothing.  I wasted many hours praying they would accept what I had to offer them.

The Lord tells us to set our minds upon the things of Christ.  In 2 Corinthians 10:5 it says; ‘Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ’.  The church keeps their members busy so they don’t have the time to think about the obedience of Christ, let alone anything He would want them to do, i.e., studying His Word.

My prayer now is that if you are a Mormon, you will study the entire passage in 1 Corinthians 15 to see where this teaching originated.  I can assure you that it had nothing to do with the Mormon Jesus’ teaching on the ‘eternal principles’ of baptizing for the dead in the meridian of times and everything to do with Jesus’ resurrection as told consistently in other scriptures in the bible. Can Mormons present the same evidence for Baptism of the dead being taught elsewhere in scripture?

Mormon Lifestyles & Daily Routines

The Mormon life is beset with many activities they see as necessary in their ultimate goal towards salvation.  Now while we can all be guilty of over scheduling our lives at times, we are assured by the Lord that we are never responsible for our own salvation – Ephesians 2:8-9 says; “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”   Good works are always a manifestation of our salvation; they never serve as a result of salvation.  They are faith in action; never because we must earn our own place beside Him.    Unfortunately for the Mormon this is not what they’ve been taught to believe.

Christian churches throughout the world all have their own schedules for activities during the week.  Of course Sunday is for worship, but besides that they also provide youth group activities, adult bible studies, prayer and mission groups, mentoring and marital workshops are even offered for weeknight activities.  All in all, I’ve never seen any two churches that have a set standard of what must be done on which day.  With all this available we understand these are just some of the things that are offered through our churches and we participate in one or two if that is where God has led us to be to bring Him glory.

As a Mormon it never occurred to me to think of what others were doing because I was always too busy trying to earn my way to heaven.  For the Mormon the list of “must do’s” never ends and to keep them focused there are sometimes a song that will go along with their daily activity.  The following list is typical for the active member of the LDS Church.

Sunday – This is the traditional day of worship.  Each member is assigned to a “ward” depending on where you live and it is through this ward the member will participate.  The ward is another name for congregation.  Church services last for three hour blocks and it is expected the member will stay the entire time.

The rest of the day is dedicated to the Lord for the sole purpose of focusing on Him.  They highly stress the members stay at home to study their “scriptures” with no shopping or housework.  When I was growing up in Utah there were many days spent at my grandfather’s house obeying these strict rules in addition to not even using electricity or cooking.  My grandmother would cook a meal the day before and we would have cold leftovers; in many Mormon homes this is still the case.

The members are expected to wear their “Sunday best” every week for church, no exceptions.  This means a dress or skirt for the ladies and girls; for the men and boys you’re looking at business office attire every week.  This manner of dress continues for the entire day, not just the church service.

Monday – This day is set aside for “Family Home Evening”.  Members are highly discouraged from doing anything outside of spending time with the family and studying “scripture” or participating in a family project at home.  The members can download Family Home Evening lessons from the LDS website and can purchase lesson books for other ideas.

Tuesdays through Fridays hold various activities depending on the age and gender of the member.  For females there are Relief Society Enrichment Activities that take place usually on a weekly basis.  It is here that she will learn the basics of parenting and homemaking skills.  They are provided to “strengthen faith in Jesus Christ”.

It is at one of these meetings where the leader will ask for volunteers to demonstrate how to cook a meal, take care of children, etc.  The Relief Society also provides “Visiting Teaching”.  This means members are assigned a handful of families they are to visit each month that are members of their ward.  This is a separate calling and is in addition to the regular Relief Society Meetings.  Keep in mind that even if you’re not one of the visiting teachers you still need to be prepared to receive the teachers into your home.  You may also receive a calling to teach Sunday school or Primary or be a leader for the young women’s group (MIA).  While they are busy prepping for their upcoming teaching lesson there are also the meetings to attend when you’re a teacher.

For the guys there are Priesthood meetings to attend on one of these nights.  In their priesthood meetings they “will be strengthened” by learning how to be better husbands, fathers and leaders of their ward.  The men may also receive a calling and will serve in various offices such as home teaching, bishops, stake presidents, auxiliary leaders, etc.  They too will have the obligatory meetings to attend in addition to preparing for their upcoming lessons they teach.

The youth group of the LDS Church is for those between the ages of 12-18.  They are separated by gender and attend their weekly activities by serving in community projects, studying “scripture” or to prepare them to become husbands and wives.  They do meet as a combined group on occasion and depending on where you live in the US the meetings are either well put together or it serves as a “hang out time” with friends.  Roughly once a quarter they’ll have a church dance or sometimes they call them “fireside meetings”.

The youth in the LDS Church also attends “Seminary” from ninth to twelfth grade.  For those outside of the Wasatch front in Utah these classes are held in the morning before school begins.  They meet daily from Monday to Friday for about an hour or so to study the history of the Church in addition to the Book of Mormon.  The youth in Utah and the surrounding area can attend seminary during their regular class schedules.  And yes they are tested each semester to see what they’ve learned.

Couples who are temple worthy and have a free evening should be spending that evening at the temple for ordinance work.  This includes sealing of family members to ensure that they will be together forever or to perform proxy work for the dead.  Single members who are temple worthy may also attend various proxy work sessions that usually take place on Tuesday evenings.

Saturday – This is a day that is reserved for a few things.  1-There is temple proxy work for the dead that needs to be done as well as the basic temple ordinance work.

2-It’s the day you get ready for Sunday.  (There is a primary song that goes along with this).  3-Depending on the ward, they may organize a work party for the church or community service project.

As you can see it is literally endless and quite exhausting.  Callings are roles that need to be filled in various capacities in the ward or stake when a vacancy presents itself.  Most callings in Mormonism are filled by volunteers or lay clergy, with no monetary compensation. The bishop literally has a list of names from his ward and if you’ve never filled the position of Primary teacher for example, and you’re a female, expect your phone to ring.  It matters not if you’re good with children or if you don’t know how to cook to be the homemaker instructor; it is now your turn to serve and it is expected you will do your duty to the Lord.  There is really no such thing as being “called by God to be the youth pastor” or “called by God to run the nursery” in the Mormon Church.

Marion Romney said; “No one should seek to be appointed to any particular office in the Church. Such an aspiration is not a righteous desire; it is a self-serving ambition…We should demonstrate that desire by living the gospel and diligently performing whatever service we are called upon to render. Holding a particular office in the Church will never save a person. One’s salvation depends upon how well he discharges the duties of the service to which he is called.” – Magnifying One’s Calling in the Priesthood – President Marion G. Romney; Second Counselor in the First Presidency; Ensign, July 1973, 89.

Each Mormon is also expected to have a year’s supply of food storage at all times so they will be prepared for the day of calamity.  The Church has always stressed the importance of “self-reliance” and this is one of the ways they can control their lives without having to rely on anyone else.  The Mormon will attend the necessary classes on how to properly store and rotate their food storage and on occasion one of the leaders will address this commandment during one of the General Conferences that are held twice a year.  If you cannot afford to buy a year’s worth of food all at once they also offer classes on how to budget each paycheck to build up your supply.  On the LDS website it says this in the food storage section; “We want you to be ready with your personal storehouses filled with at least a year’s supply. You don’t argue why it cannot be done; you just plan to organize and get it done” (Spencer W. Kimball, August 1976).”  You can also read Ezra Taft Benson’s warning to the saints about the importance of food storage in the same section of their website.  He said; “What are some of the calamities for which we are to prepare? In section 29 the Lord warns us of “a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of the earth.” (D&C 29:16.) In section 45 we read of “an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.” (D&C 45:31.) In section 63 the Lord declares he has “decreed wars upon the face of the earth. …” (D&C 63:33.)

Mormons have been taught to receive as much education as possible in their lifetime.  This is why you see so many successful people in the Church with many of them speaking at least two languages.  The Church prides itself on intelligence and has assured its members this is just one of the ways to salvation.  In the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 692 it says; “According to latter-day scripture, “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth” (D&C 93:36). Mankind, too, may be glorified by gaining intelligence (D&C 93:28-30). As Christ did not receive a fulness of intelligence at first but continued from “grace to grace” until he received a fulness (D&C 93:11-13, 27-28), so it is with all persons. Whatever principles of intelligence they gain in mortality will rise with them in the Resurrection (D&C 130:18-19).

In many ways the LDS Church resembles another church that existed in the early days of Christianity; it was known as Gnosticism.  There was always a higher truth to be learned in order to gain salvation and so it is with the Mormons today.  Satan has just wrapped the same old lie into a pretty new package with a bright shiny bow.  Smart people in this day and age are looked up to and revered in many vocations; doctors and lawyers are just two examples of this phenomenon.  Let us remember what Paul told the Corinthians in his first epistle.  1 Cor. 8:1-2; “… Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.  And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.”

The LDS Church also expects all members to pay a full ten percent tithe to the Church.  For each member there is a yearly tithing settlement meeting with the bishop; it is at this time you either pay up what you owe for the year or you go without your temple recommend.  These little pieces of wallet sized papers are coveted by members of the Church.  They serve as proof of a member’s worthiness to get to the Celestial Kingdom and make it possible for them to buy and wear their temple garments.  D&C 119:4 says; “And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.”

Collection plates are not passed around during the Sacrament meetings so the members just turn their tithes in directly to the bishop each time they tithe.  In addition to their ten percent tithe that is expected there is also the “fast offering” they give one Sunday a month at their “fast and testimony meetings”.  These meetings are held in lieu of a Sacrament meeting where the member is expected to “fast from food” before the meeting.  They then donate the money they would have spent on food for the Church to help the poor in the community or for someone in their own ward.  It is during these meetings where various members will stand to “bear their testimony” about the “one true Church”.  If you’re old enough to talk, you are deemed old enough to participate in bearing your testimony.  It seems hard to believe that a three year old would have a testimony about the Church, but this is what you will see at these gatherings.  It serves as proof these are memorized things to say instead of it coming from the inner part of a person’s heart.

A young person growing up in Mormonism is taught at an early age to begin saving for the day they can go on a mission.  The mission program in the Mormon Church is for young adults around the age of 19 and for the “older” crowd.   Generally a married couple will volunteer to go out and serve as mission director for a few years after they’ve established themselves financially and have no major commitments such as small children in the home.  The children are taught the Primary song “I hope they call me on a mission” and this is sung routinely throughout their childhood.

Young men serve their missions for two years while the young women serve an eighteen month mission.  I remember sitting in the pews as a young girl begging God not to let me go on my mission.  If I was old enough to go on a mission it meant I still wasn’t married and I still didn’t have any children.  Nowadays young girls tend to wait for those things a little while longer.  Up until the last ten years young women didn’t go on missions until they were in their early twenties, but now they have the option to go when they’re nineteen as well.  It’s a mixed bag of emotions for the girls in this department even today.  If you’re nineteen and not even engaged, you’re definitely planning a mission and quite possibly a full four years of college and for the female this may as well be a death sentence.

The pressure to marry and have children in Mormonism is like nothing you’ll ever experience with any career.  The girls are primed and tutored from toddlers on how to quilt, sew, cook, clean and take care of children.  They begin making plans for which temple they’ll be married in someday as well as how many children they will have for their husbands.  The quest for a “forever family” isn’t much different for the guys with the exception they know they’re going on a mission; no questions asked.  They cannot become a god or be exalted without partaking of the everlasting covenant of marriage – this is true salvation for every member of the LDS Church.  The Mormon female cannot enter heaven without her husband’s consent and will end up as a servant in heaven if she doesn’t get married for all time and eternity here on earth.  Erastus Snow’s words are recorded in Journal of Discourses 5:291; “No woman will get into the celestial kingdom, except her husband receives her, if she is worthy to have a husband; and if not, somebody will receive her as a servant.”

This teaching was so ingrained in me personally that even when I became an inactive Mormon which lasted for thirteen years, the drive to have babies to be found worthy overwhelmed my thoughts for years.   I had to be married, I had to have children; no matter the cost and no matter to whom.  God at this point had absolutely nothing to do with it because I was earning my salvation by performing these perfunctory duties.  It is emotionally and mentally exhausting.

The Mormon people do celebrate birthdays and holidays with a few exceptions.  They celebrate things like Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas, however they do not observe days like Good Friday, Lent, Palm Sunday or Pentecost.  On Easter Sunday they will not hear about the resurrection of Jesus, but instead will hear thanks being given for the Prophet Joseph Smith.  All significance of who Jesus is, what He did and what God did for us through Christ is virtually non-existent in Mormonism in regards to truth about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  You can see the response given by the Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith to a question about Good Friday in Answers to Gospel Questions 5:155; “Now as you well know that the resurrection did not vary and it is foolish to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord at the end of March or the first of April, or middle of April or near the first of May, and put Good Friday the Friday before the Easter Sunday. I think you are wise enough to see the foolishness of it. The resurrection of the Savior does not vary year by year but it is a constant thing. Why should we follow the silly custom rather than to have one day for the resurrection?

Now if all these things weren’t enough there is more.  I have never met a Mormon who didn’t have the following two things in common:  they cannot say with 100% certainty that they are going to heaven, and they truly believe they have to be perfect.  The Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 1074 says; “The man or woman who seeks the perfection of the Redeemer participates in the Father’s work of saving and exalting mankind: “He proceeds to help his frail fellow men in their attempts to progress; thus becoming a partner with God in working out the Plan of Salvation” (Widtsoe, p. 180). Latter-day Saints believe that they must become perfected and one in spirit, as individuals and as a body (Eph. 4:12), in order to inherit the kingdom of God.”

Each time I meet a Mormon I ask them the same question: “if you died today would you go to heaven”.  I’ve never had a Mormon tell me they are certain they are going to heaven, not one time.  Their response my friend is why Life After Ministries is in existence today.  To me there is nothing sadder than to look in their eyes and not see any hope.

In Deuteronomy 28:66 the Lord warned the nation of Israel they would have no hope for their lives if they continued in worshipping false gods and participating in hatred towards their brothers and sisters.  The Lord said this in verse 66; “And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life.”  Now for the Mormon who says this curse was meant for the Israelites in the Old Testament, I have a question for you.  You insist that you must obey the Law of Moses, yet you claim to live under grace through Jesus.  The Church leaders are continually telling its members they must “obey the gospel ordinances”.  God tells us in the Bible that if you live by the Law you will be judged by the Law.  You simply can’t have it both ways.  The scripture I’ve pointed out in Deuteronomy is exactly what has happened to the Mormon people.  Remember, the LDS Church believes that the body of Christ is the whore of the earth (1 Nephi 14:10); those aren’t exactly loving words for their brothers and sisters.

The expectations a member of the Church carries on their shoulders is ever-so heavy and will never be attainable the way they are going about it!  Each day of the week is pre-planned for them; they must be perfect; they are to answer to man for how much they give monetarily after they’ve given all they can physically, mentally, emotionally and most important, spiritually.  They are to serve in areas they are ill-equipped to serve on many occasions and they must always look to themselves to be saved.  It is a dismal situation at best.  They have no choice of how they will dress for church or even when or where they will go to church; every single move is dictated by pre-set “ordinances”.

We receive many e-mails asking us why we “pick on the Mormons” and not all the other religions.  Our answer is twofold.  First, we haven’t been called to witness to other religions who are speaking of some other savior with another name.  We’ve been called by the Jesus of the Bible to witness to those who call their savior by the name of Jesus.  Secondly, I am totally convinced the people of Mormonism truly believe they are doing all this for the real Jesus.  I know because I was one of them for thirty years and just as I deserved to know the truth, so do they.

If you’re a Mormon you must be told that God doesn’t need you.  God doesn’t need any of us at all.  Think about it…if God needs man, then what kind of god is he anyway?  And is that the type of god you’d want to worship?  The God of the Bible is big enough, smart enough to handle the things that come His way.

Know that we pray for you daily and hope to hear from you!

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle

600 BC

Since I’ve been a Christian one of the coolest things I’ve discovered and will never get tired from is the way God places people and situations together.  Case in point is Bible studies.  I don’t know about you, but every time I sit to do my Bible study, the Lord will invariably use what I’ve learned to share it with a Mormon or someone in my life whether it is work or at home.  The women’s ministry at my church studied the book of Jeremiah this year.  When I signed up I was excited because I didn’t really know much at all about Jeremiah other than he was a prophet in the Old Testament.

It’ll be 14 years ago this month (March 20007) that I accepted the Lord into my life and you’d think I’d have studied him by now, but it was always something else that came up.  I love studies because I am able to keep the focus off of me and as I said, He will always use it for His glory!

This particular study has to be one of my very favorites.  I feel as if I’m a brand new Christian again with all that I’m learning and know just how blessed I am while I soak up His provision in the Word.  There have been many times it has brought back the memories of what it was like growing up in Utah a sixth generation Mormon.

I don’t recall how many times that I would sit on my bed at night and try to line up parts of the Old Testament with the Book of Mormon.  I remember each time I tried this and then asked someone to help me sort out the confusion; I was repeatedly told that we’ll figure that out when we come before the Lord.  When I’d etch out the times to be alone and read again, I would get lost and more confused with the stories of Nephi leaving the fold and getting on that boat to cross the ocean.

Now here it is some thirty years later and I’m finally getting it!  Thank you Lord!  The stories from the Book of Mormon and the Bible aren’t ever going to match up and it doesn’t matter how long you study it or from what angle, it doesn’t fit.

I know this sounds like it’s over simplifying the events, but for those of us who aren’t qualified to be in the discussion boards of FARMS or FAIR, indulge me for a moment if you will.

When we open up the Book of Mormon we can see from the very first page that it is describing how the “prophet Lehi” was called by God to escape the impending doom of His wrath upon Israel.  At the bottom of the first page the date of BC 600 tells us when the events of the Book of Mormon supposedly took place.

There are several problems with this scenario when you compare it to the Bible and the historical aspect of that time period.  In Jeremiah we are given several examples of when events took place like the three different stages of when Babylon took Israel and Judah into captivity.  It began in BC 605 and continued on until about BC 586, but the nation of Israel was finally let out of captivity after they had been exiled for seventy years.

We have dates of when Egypt fell to Babylon at Battle of Carchemish in BC 605 and dates of when Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD.  These things are documented, verified and obviously true, factual events in history.  We have ample evidence of communities that existed and were then destroyed all throughout the Middle East during history.  The wells from where Jacob offered sacrifices to God, down to the location of the Garden of Gethsemane can all be verified.

There are two immediate reasons why we can’t trust the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith.

The first problem that raises suspicion is the date.  In BC 600 Israel had just experienced it’s first of three stages of being taken into captivity by the Babylonians.  The Lord God had given the Israelites specific guidelines as to what they should do during the sieges, whom to listen to and how to behave; then He gave them a choice.

The children of God could submit themselves willingly to the yoke of slavery or they would die by one of three ways; famine, pestilence or sword.  In other words, God never gave the tribes a choice of fleeing the continent!  You either chose to submit, be obedient and He would bless you and prosper you while in captivity; or you became food for the vultures.

The other problem is why.  Why would you worship a god who doesn’t keep his promises?  The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob promised His children they would be punished for their sin of idol worship.  The Bible specifically declares what happened to the Israelites. Yet Joseph Smith introduces a “lost tribe” that claims they fled the scene.

Why should you believe those people are holy?

Why should you believe a group of people that kept going back to retrieve the plates and writings of their people if they thought their people were behaving ungodly?  Remember how Nephi made a few attempts at going back to retrieve the plates and ran into continuous trouble until he finally beheaded Laban in 1 Nephi 4:18?

Both kingdoms of Israel and Judah were definitely living in sin, that’s why God punished them by sending them into captivity.  Both Israel and Judah had their own set of problems and neither of them was any better than the other nations (Gentiles) that surrounded them.  So when the missionary tells you they “escaped” because of the sin around them, you can now say that God provided a way out and they obviously rejected it.  IF in fact they were even a “real tribe” to begin with!

The rest of First Nephi chapter four goes on to tell the reader that they were afraid the Jew would find out what they were doing.  They spoke of “the Jews” as if they weren’t one of them.  Did they or did they not come from the God of Israel?  1 Nephi 18:1-8 is the story of the ship being packed and how they sailed for the Promised Land.

The examples are taken from the entire book of Jeremiah.  The majority of the book of Jeremiah is filled with prophecy, so if I listed all the scriptures about the subjects I’d basically be writing down the entire book of Jeremiah. The promise of forgiveness and redemption by God, the remnant He will leave here on earth and the punishment God deals out to His people is intermixed with future prophecy.   Also note, the book of Jeremiah is not in chronological order.

Below is a chart that contains the basics; timeline, God’s instructions, behavior of people, and the results.

 *Time of Jeremiah’s ministry.

**Notes from Ryrie Study Bible, NASB, 1995

Because it’s impossible to write anything about Jeremiah and not mention Daniel or Ezekiel you will notice if you study anything further about Jeremiah, you will be referring back to their books in addition to 1st and 2nd Kings.  Jeremiah served from BC 627 to BC 585.  Ezekiel’s and Daniel’s ministry took place in BC 592-570 and BC 605-536 respectively.  So as you can see these three power houses were contemporaries.  Their books provide a comprehensive view of rulers, people, countries and God’s dealings with mankind.

I would like to encourage and challenge the members of the LDS Church to not just take my word for this Biblical truth, but also to look at these events from an historical outlook as well.  The following is a short list of what was going on historically worldwide from BC 600 – 570.

The following references were taken from
http://www.answers.com/topic/6th-century-bc

BC 600 – “The Persian religious leader Zoroaster in this century will found a faith whose sacred literature will be the Zend-Avesta. The teachings of Zoroaster (Zarathustra) will dominate Persian religious thought for centuries.”

BC 597 – “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, with exotic shrubs and flowers irrigated by water pumped from the Euphrates.”

BC 597 – “Jerusalem falls March 16 to Babylon’s Nebuchadnezzar II (Nebuchadrezzar II), who plunders the city and has Judah’s king Jehoiachin taken to Babylon, where he will be imprisoned for years (see 587 B.C.).”

BC 595 – “Egypt’s 26th dynasty king Necho II dies after a 15-year reign and is succeeded by his son, who will defend his southern borders against the kingdom of Cush in his 6-year reign as Psamtik II.”

BC 568 – “The former Egyptian king Apries invades his former realm with support from Babylon’s Nebuchadnezzar II (Nebuchadrezzar II), but he is defeated and imprisoned; although he escapes, he is later murdered by the usurper Ahmose II, who has him buried with full military honors.”

Birth of Jesus; Purely Philosophical or Purely Divine?

 Christmas 2007

Gal. 5:24; “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

      While doing some research for a project I came across the following statement made by the Prophet Brigham Young in Journal of Discourses 8:115-116;

“While brother Joseph was referring to the providences of God, I was led to reflect that there is no act, no principle, no power belonging to the Deity that is not purely philosophical. The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood—was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.

This quote was one of those that made me stop in my tracks.  How pathetically disgusting the thoughts was of this man to say such a thing!  I’ve always said that you can worship the rocks in your back yard and call them “god”, but that doesn’t make it any truer than calling my car “god”.

Mankind has learned a lot about the Lord over the past 6,000 plus years, but that is only because God has revealed these things to us.  How could anyone believe the birth of Christ is purely philosophical?  We only know what we do about Him because of what He’s revealed to us and nothing more.  If His Son’s conception and birth could be found out through philosophical means, why pray tell are you worshipping a god that can only be as good as you are?

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can assure you that I am grateful I worship the Only God of the Universe.  I am assured success at the end of each day knowing that I can find comfort, rest, forgiveness and safety in His arms.  I can still have bad days here on earth, but one thing is certain – my concerns for tomorrow lay in His Sovereign Hands.

Debasing the Father and Son brings no comfort to my soul.  I don’t find any peace in thinking that He had to make the same stupid mistakes I go through here on earth.  My question to those who believe this – how could you?

Gal. 6:7; “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Here are the definitions of a few words taken from the American Heritage Dictionary and Random House Unabridged Dictionary at www.dictionary.com

Philosophy – “Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.

Virgin – A person who has not experienced sexual intercourse

Incest – “The crime of sexual intercourse, cohabitation, or marriage between persons within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity wherein marriage is legally forbidden.”

 * [see reference at end of article]

Now read what the Apostle Orson Pratt had to say about the Heavenly Father and His daughter Mary:

The Seer, pg. 158; The fleshly body of Jesus required a Mother as well as a Father.  Therefore, the Father and Mother of Jesus, according to the flesh, must have been associated together in the capacity of Husband and Wife; hence the Virgin Mary must have been, for the time being, the lawful wife of God the Father: we use the term lawful Wife, because it would be blasphemous  in the highest degree to say that He overshadowed her or begat the Savior unlawfully….But God having created all men and women had the most perfect right to do with His own creation, according  to His holy will and pleasure: He had a lawful right to overshadow the Virgin Mary in the capacity of a husband, and beget a Son, although she was espoused to another, for the law which He gave to govern men and women was not intended to govern Himself, or to prescribe rules for his own conduct.  ..Inasmuch as God was the first husband to her, it may be that He only gave her to be the wife of Joseph while in this mortal state, and that He intended after the resurrection to again take her as one of his own wives to raise up immortal spirits in eternity.

Why would you want to believe in a god that is your “father” knowing that in heaven you’d be married to him for eternity?  As a female, the thought of sleeping with your father typically makes you shutter.  I can only imagine that any decent man would have the same reaction.

I was a sixth generation Mormon from Utah and in the Church for thirty years.  For the last couple or so years of my Mormon life I began giving some serious attention and purposeful thoughts to the subject of “religion”.  I wasn’t so sure that I could stomach another religion per se; however I had a deep desire to read more about Jesus and find the truth.  There were just too many teachings in Mormonism that overshadowed the basics.

In those last couple of years before I accepted the truth, my heart began to panic when I thought of the implications.  I couldn’t stand the thought of being eternally pregnant and began telling God that I wanted to go to hell so I didn’t have to be married for eternity.  Then there were many times I’d have an overwhelming urge to sit and read the Gospels, knowing in my heart that I wanted to be in heaven someday.  As those times of study began more frequent, it occurred to me one day that I should probably read up on my Book of Mormon to see why I had such an aversion to it.  So I studied.

The truth is this:  no where in the Bible does it say that God had sex with Mary.  No where in the Bible does it say that Jesus was “the only begotten according to the flesh”; no where in the Bible does it say that Jesus was married.  The Bible doesn’t condone polygamy, nor does it intimate that God is an exalted man.  On the contrary the Word of God is consistently consistent!

The entire Old Testament points to and prophecies about the coming Messiah.  I’ve never counted the number of verses in the Bible that describes God and/or Jesus.  I do know there are 333 prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus Christ (all were fulfilled).  The point being I’d be here forever making sure I listed all of them.  For now, let’s take a look at just a handful of places we can “gain knowledge” about our God in order to worship Him the way we are meant to!  I’ve listed several scriptures identifying the reality about the God of the Universe and His Beloved Only Begotten Son, Jesus.

And please, if you’re LDS, pray about these and ask God to give you clarity of mind when you do.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle

Nahum 1:3-5; The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.  4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers…5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

Matthew 8:25-27; And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.  27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Eph. 3:9; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.

      I pray that during this Christmas season the Mormon people will take more than just a few minutes to think about whom they are worshipping.  The Jesus of the Bible is not a created being, but in fact is the Creator; He is God Incarnate; Redeemer; Prince of Peace; Light of the world; Son of God; and last but not least;

Jude 1:24-25; Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Holidays Celebrated by the Mormons

We receive a lot of requests asking if Mormons celebrate Easter, birthdays and other holidays that most Christians observe.  When I was in the Mormon Church it didn’t occur to me that by not observing things like Good Friday would be looked upon as strange by those outside of our clan.  Now that I’m a Christian I look with eager anticipation for Holy Week to come around every year.  It’s hard to believe that I used to be so ignorant about such important items in life.

Mormons observe all holidays and birthdays that everyone else does in America.  With the exception of Easter day they do not celebrate any days during Holy Week.  They also don’t observe Ash Wednesday, Pentecost, Lent or Passover.

As my experience in the Christian lifestyle grew I came to realize just how empty my spiritual life was as a Mormon and how grateful I am now to the Lord for His awesome gift of salvation!

Please come alongside us to lift these dear people up in prayer for God to open their hearts and eyes to accept His free gift of love and salvation!

 With Love in Christ

January 24 – Aside from the perfect announcement that God came in human flesh to pay the price for sin, the New Testament is mainly about the doctrines of God.  In it we find how to conduct ourselves even through the simple structure of church life.  1 Tim. 3:12 says; “let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well”.

_____

Clearly, this message from Paul is not meant for children.  Yet, it is the practice of the Mormon Church to have 12 year old boys serve as deacons of their church.

_____

“They are assigned to passing the sacrament, perform messenger services, act as ushers, keep church facilities in good repair, go home teaching, and perform special assignments at the direction of the bishopric”.   Mormon Doctrine, pg. 183.

Studying the Book of Mormon 11

“The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.” – Lord Macaulay

If I were to rank the books in the Book of Mormon on the level of the most nefarious and cockamamie stories, Ether would be at the very top of my list.  It’s obvious from Joseph Smith’s paper trail that nothing was left to the imagination of what kind of man he was.

One of the main problems with this story is the timeline.  According to reputable historians, the confounding of languages at the Tower of Babel took place circa 3,300 BC and through the Peleg continental division in 3006 BC.  Ether supposedly took place in 2200 BC.

A very reliable and well written site on the historical, archaeological and biblical findings of this event in history can be found here:

http://ldolphin.org/babel.html

The book of Ether contains so many impossibilities, false prophecies, plagiarisms, contradictions and flat out lies that we’re just going to jump right into the list this week.

If the book of Mormon is true, it’ll hold up to the scrutiny and prove itself to be from God.  Thus far, history has proven otherwise.  If you’re a member of the LDS Church, do this for yourself; actually study it and see if I’m wrong.  This isn’t a time for feelings – this is a time for truth.

We learn from scripture when we should and shouldn’t judge.  I was reminded of this while doing some research for a friend about another subject matter.  We are not to judge motives which are hidden because only God knows our hearts.  According to Paul we are not to judge what others eat or drink because those things are between that person and God alone.  Romans 14:1-4.  We must, however, judge public teachings and commanded to do this as Paul advised Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:6.

False prophets teach messages that come from themselves, not from God.  Jesus tells us in John chapter ten that He is the door and robbers never go through the door of Jesus.  They always try to hoist themselves up through another way, to trick the sheep with another teaching and another belief.  They always have a secret or exclusive doorway and teaching they’ve privately been shown by God.

We are to defend the gospel that has been delivered once to the saints (Jude 1:3) and hate even the garment that’s been tarnished (Jude 1:23).

Here’s what the LDS Church has to say about Mr. Smith’s teachings; as you can see, they obviously don’t have a problem with what he did or said.

“As guided by the Spirit, Joseph spent about three years going through the Bible, making thousands of corrections to the text and restoring information that had been lost. This restored information sheds marvelous light on many doctrines that are not clearly presented in the Bible as it exists today.

 Noteworthy teachings

Jared says you can read about Sodom and Gomorrah as well as Jericho in the Bible, why would the Mormons do this if the Bible is corrupt? – Ether 1:4

Everyone’s language confounded but Jared, his brother & friends – Ether 1:35-7

Jared and brother along with families and friends of friends and their families went to the valley to gather animals – Ether 2:1

Sailing crew commanded to go no further than America – Ether 2:7

Circa 2,200 BC even before there were Israelites, Gentiles told to repent – Ether 2:11

God leaves when you sin – Ether 2:15

God forgot they needed air in the barge so Jared instructs God on how to build a seafaring vessel – Ether 2:16

Barge built tight just like a dish – Ether 2:17

Built the boat so they wouldn’t drown in the flood – ??? – Ether 2:20

Brother of Jared saw the finger of Jesus and was afraid Jesus would smite him because he found out God has flesh and bones – Ether 3:8

No one has greater faith than brother of Jared – Ether 3:9

There are a couple of problems with the verse listed below.

Ether 3:13; “And when he had said these words, behold, the Lord showed himself unto him, and said: Because thou knowest these things ye are redeemed from the fall; therefore ye are brought back into my presence; therefore I show myself unto you.

This story contradicts the Bible – no man has seen God.  Exodus 33:20

Knowing something doesn’t bring salvation – Eph. 2:8-9

How can God be the father and the son? – Ether 3:14

VERY confusing verse –

Ether 3:19;And because of the knowledge of this man he could not be kept from beholding within the veil; and he saw the finger of Jesus, which, when he saw, he fell with fear; for he knew that it was the finger of the Lord; and he had faith no longer, for he knew, nothing doubting.

Why would God do this?  Only priests were allowed behind the veil.  What’s the deal with the faith statement?

Brother of Jared has perfect knowledge of God – Ether 3:20

Another VERY confusing verse –

Ether 3:22;And behold, when ye shall come unto me, ye shall write them and shall seal them up, that no one can interpret them; for ye shall write them in a language that they cannot be read.

Again, why would God do something like this?  Why would he have something written in a language no one could understand?

Jesus shows the nameless brother of Jared every single person on earth that had lived before him and even those who will ever live on the face of the earth after him – Ether 3:25

God can’t withhold anything – Ether 3:26

Textual change – Mosiah was Benjamin in 1830 version – Ether 4:1

Moroni seals up the interpreters – Ether 4:5

Jesus curses anyone that doesn’t believe the Book of Mormon – Ether 4:8

Either God is talking about his father in heaven or Jesus is his own dad – Ether 4:12

Circa 2,200 BC, before there were Israelites, Jesus calls upon the Gentiles to believe – Ether 4:13

Only 3 uneducated men will know how to translate plates – Ether 5:2-4

Was Orihah a polygamist?  He had 31 kids – Ether 7:2

Story of John the Baptist lifted with name changes – Ether 8:4

Why were these Jewish people eating pork? – Ether 9:18

Lots of big cities…no archaeological evidence – Ether 9:23

Many serpents poison lots of people – Ether 9:31

Poisonous serpents chase people – Ether 9:33

Oaths are bad – Ether 10:33

They rejected the prophets because of their secret societies (Mormons come to mind…) – Ether 11:22

In 2200 BC the Spirit of the Lord was inside of Ether – Ether 12:2

Christ showed himself after his resurrection to the fathers of Jaredites (remember this was written in 2200 BC) – Ether 12:7

By faith the Law of Moses was given – Ether 12:11

By faith the 3 disciples didn’t die – Ether 12:17

Many people saw beyond the veil because of faith – Ether 12:19

Wanted to write more but was forbidden – Ether 13:13

The curse of the vanishing tools – Ether 14:1

Fighting for the defense of his property and wives – Ether 14:2

One of the secret combinations murdered a high priest – Ether 14:10

Coriantumr invites Shiz to battle – Ether 14:28

2 million people died in war (this is 5x the number of Americans killed in WW2) – Ether 15:2

Headless Shiz rises up on his arms and breathes – Ether 15:31

Use of the phrase “and it came to pass”

Ether has 433 verses and this phrase showed up 167 times in 156 of the verses.  That means 35% of the text contains this phrase.  Questions for the Mormon: how does this glorify God and how did this phrase add to the storyline of the text?

 False prophecies

Intro for Ether – God didn’t confound their language (Gen. 11:9)

Ether 1:35 – God didn’t confound their language (Gen. 11:9)

Ether 1:43 – This is a false prophecy. These folks were destroyed.

Ether 3:9-17 – Because of faith of Jared’s brother, God will become man & he showed himself unto the brother of Jared

Ether 4:6 – Gospel not given to Gentiles until they repent

Ether 4:15 – Those who don’t believe Book of Mormon are not saved

Ether 6:11; “And thus they were driven forth, three hundred and forty and four days upon the water.

I have a few questions about the verse above.  According to the website of Port World, sailing from Kuwait to Los Angeles is 11,551 miles.  Sailing along at 4 knots would take 121 days.
http://www.portworld.com/map

Most ships at the time of the Greco-Roman Empire could sail from 50-60 miles per day with 170 oarsmen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trireme

How many people were on that ship and why didn’t God know how to build the barge with the amount of people needed to properly navigate it?  Why did it take them 3 times longer than it should have?

Ether 12:11 – By faith the Law of Moses was given and the Son came because of faith.  Jesus came to pay the price for sin, not because people had faith.

Ether 12:19 – by faith the ancient fathers saw behind the veil

Ether 15:19 – Spirit of the Lord went away because of sin (the Bible tells us He will never leave once He comes to us in John 14:16-17)

 Plagiarism

 Ether 4:18-19 – See Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16-17; Matthew 25:34

Islam vs Mormonism

 by Kirk Grim

The Islamic faith is centered on the belief in one God and in Arabic he is called Allah. The Muslims, followers of Islam, believe that Muhammad was visited by an angel of light from whom he received God’s final revelation.
