Apostles of the LDS Church

Current Apostles

Here’s the rest of the apostles!  One last thing we noticed with the information we gleaned was the emphasis of how successful these men were/are in their professional lives.  We’re sure that if you delve into each one individually there is more to their stories, but we found it interesting as Melissa pointed out the other day that none have been noted for miracles or going out to preach the word without purse or script.

Humble Following or Misguided Trust?

The lengths to which members of the LDS Church will go never ceases to amaze me when defending the position they take about Joseph Smith.  I could write volumes upon volumes of books containing testimonials of how wonderful Mr. Smith is and if it weren’t for Mr. Smith then no one could be saved.

Apostles of the LDS (Mormon) Church

On Palm Sunday of 1993 I accepted the Lord Jesus into my heart as God and Savior.  From that day on my life was never the same – praise God!  Not long after I was saved from an eternal life separated from God, it became increasingly clear that what I was going to do with my life was about to change as well.

Man has Power within to Become Like God

Doctrines of Salvation 2:35; Man has within him the power, which the Father has bestowed upon him… that eventually he shall become like the Father and the Son; this virtue, wisdom, and knowledge on the part of the faithful does not rob the Father and the Son, but adds to their glory and dominion. Thus it is destined that those who are worthy to become his sons and joint-heirs with our Redeemer, would be heirs of the Father’s kingdom, possessing the same attributes in their perfection, as the Father and the Son now possess.

Laws of God not Perfect Yet

Journal of Discourses 2:314; The laws that the Lord has given are not fully perfect, because the people could not receive them in their perfect fulness; but they can receive a little here and a little there, a little today and a little to-morrow, a little more next week, and a little more in advance of that next year, if they make a wise improvement upon every little they receive; if they do not, they are left in the shade, and the light which the Lord reveals will appear darkness to them, and the kingdom of heaven will travel on and leave them groping. Hence, if we wish to act upon the fulness of the knowledge that the Lord designs to reveal, little by little, to the inhabitants of the earth, we must improve upon every little as it is revealed.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, July 8, 1855

The Twelve Apostles

Right now I’m watching a sermon by John MacArthur on the 12 apostles (link below). As I watch it I can’t help but think about the Mormon 12 and how completely different these two groups of men are. Jesus’ 12 were taught at his feet and then were sent out by him to proclaim salvation is only through Him. They went out to share the gospel with nothing, they healed people, anointed the sick, and cast out demons. They did what Jesus did, they had all the power Jesus did over these things.  2 Corinthians 12:12 reads “The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. “

The Mormon 12 are called by their prophet, they preach a false gospel of works, receive the rock star treatment when they travel and haven’t healed anyone. Where are their signs, wonders and miracles?

False Prophets and Prophecies of the Mormon Church

Today while perusing the official website of the LDS Church I came upon their page defining the role of a prophet.  I thought it’d be of interest for us to just take a look at what they say and see if we can glean any insight.  http://lds.org/study/topics/prophets?lang=eng

What is necromancy?

Mormon Doctrine pg. 526; “Necromancy is that form of divination which attempts to foretell the future by consultation with the dead. Sometimes the term is enlarged to include magic in general. It is and has been a common practice among apostate peoples, but the Lord calls it an abomination and expressly commands Israel to avoid it. (Deut. 18:9-14.)”

Mormon Plan of Happiness

The other day I came across a couple of verses in Hebrews 4:12-13 from a Christian blog I was reading (http://doesthebible.wordpress.com)

The verses say;

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Mormon Testimonies

While compiling some testimonies of ex-Mormons for our site it occurred to me how much the testimony of Mormons and ex-Mormons are so vastly different.  While we’ve written about this many times one significant thing came shining forth about the differences.

What is the Meaning of “Families are Forever”?

Gospel Fundamentals, pg. 177; “God made it possible for families to be together forever. He has given the leaders of His Church the authority to bind families together forever. This binding together is called sealing. This sealing can take place only in a temple. Temples are sacred buildings where only faithful members of the Church may go. When a man and woman are sealed in the temple by someone who holds the priesthood and has special power to seal, their marriage will not end when they die. Their marriage will last forever if they keep the promises they made in the temple. This is called eternal marriage.

If a man and a woman are not sealed in the temple, the marriage ends when one of them dies. If we are sealed in the temple, and if we faithfully follow Jesus Christ to the end of our lives, our families can be together forever.”

Romney and Huntsman Glaringly Absent in Iowa Family Leader Forum

Where were Mitt Romney and/or Jon Hunstman yesterday and why weren’t they at the Christian church in Iowa with all the other Republican candidates?

Ironically enough the name of the conference was “Family Leader Forum”.  Mormons are all about families, right?

I have to wonder…did they not go because it was held inside a Christian church or was it because they might be asked about their faith?  When I was a Mormon (for 30 yrs no less) it was drilled into me not to step foot in a Christian church or bookstore.

God’s Secret Promised Land?

2 Nephi 10:20;And now, my beloved brethren, seeing that our merciful God has given us so great knowledge concerning these things, let us remember him, and lay aside our sins, and not hang down our heads, for we are not cast off; nevertheless, we have been driven out of the land of our inheritance; but we have been led to a better land, for the Lord has made the sea our path, and we are upon an isle of the sea.

What does the word Christ mean?

The word “Christ” first appears in Matthew 1:1.  The Greek rendering is “Christos” meaning anointed, the Messiah.  Messiah is a term for a high priest who was consecrated with oil.  The term Christ is never used in the Septuagint (oldest Greek version of the Old Testament).

Are men born into sin?

Mosiah 3:19 says yes;For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

New Era Article “Why We Do Missionary Work”

Part 1 – An Altar and a Sacrifice

I came across a speech given by Dallin Oaks which was then published in the New Era Magazine by the LDS Church and wanted to share it with our visitors.  There were several items of interest in this one speech, but for now we’re looking at just the first paragraph.  This topic warrants thousands of pages to be written, alas, the few things I have to say here is barely scratching the surface of all there is to say about Jesus, His death on the Cross and how our sins are atoned for.

Baptism, When Did it Begin

Articles of Faith, pg. 110;The Establishment of Baptism dates from the time of the earliest history of the race. When the Lord manifested Himself to Adam after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, He promised the patriarch of the race: “If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son…” – James Talmage

Posthumous Baptisms for Murderers

Peggy Fletcher Stack, Salt Lake Tribune, June 3, 2009; “Prominent fundamentalist Mormons, most of whom were excommunicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for practicing polygamy while they were alive, have been posthumously re-baptized in LDS temples, a Salt Lake City researcher says.

Helen Radkey said in a new report that she obtained church records on 20 fundamentalists — from murderer Ervil LeBaron to Joseph Musser to Rulon Jeffs — showing that they’ve been baptized and have had their plural marriages “sealed” for time and eternity by proxy LDS members, one as recently as this year.
