Book of Mormon Declares Bible is True

Discourses of Brigham Young, pg 127; “What do the infidel world say about the Bible? They say that the Bible is nothing better than last year’s almanac; it is nothing but a fable of priestcraft, and it is good for nothing. The Book of Mormon, however, declares that the Bible is true, and it proves it; and the two prove each other true.”

Temple in Far West?

D&C 115:7-12; “Let the city, Far West, be a holy and consecrated land unto me; and it shall be called most holy, for the ground upon which thou standest is holy.8 Therefore, I command you to build a house unto me, for the gathering together of my saints, that they may worship me.  And let there be a beginning of this work, and a foundation, and a preparatory work, this following summer;10 And let the beginning be made on the fourth day of July next; and from that time forth let my people labor diligently to build a house unto my name;11 And in one year from this day let them re-commence laying the foundation of my house.12 Thus let them from that time forth labor diligently until it shall be finished, from the corner stone thereof unto the top thereof, until there shall not anything remain that is not finished.”

Bible Alone Cannot Save

Discourses of Brigham Young, pg 127; “We have learned much from the Bible. We have also learned much from the Book of Mormon and the book of Doctrine and Covenants; but all the salvation you can obtain by means of those books alone is comparatively of little value. They contain a history of what other men have done, show the path they walked in, and the way in which they obtained the words of eternal life for themselves; but all the Scriptures from the days of Adam until now cannot, alone, save one individual.” – Also see Journal of Discourses 7:332.

Kirtland Anti-Banking Society Flop – Saints Will be Rich!

Latter-day Saint Messenger & Advocate, April 1837, pg. 488; “He then closed at about 4 P. M. by uttering a prophesy saying this place must be built up, and would be built up, and that every brother that would take hold and help secure and discharge those contracts that had been made, should be rich.”

Women

Companion to Your Study of the New Testament: The Four Gospels: pg 333; “It was the Prophet Joseph Smith who set forth the ideals for womanhood. He advocated liberally for women in the purest sense of the word, and he gave them liberty to fully express themselves as mothers, as nurses to the sick, as proponents of high community ideals, and as protectors of good morals.”

Godhood is Eternal Progression

Companion to Your Study of the New Testament: The Four Gospels: pg 121-122; “One of the definite and distinctive teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the principle of eternal progression. Carried to its ultimate conclusion, this principle indicates that through obedience to divine commandments, and by virtue of an eternal law that “like begets after its own kind,” it is possible for sons and daughters of God to become as he is. This doctrine of the potential godhood of mankind was clearly understood in biblical times but was lost to the world during the period of the great apostasy.”

Forgiveness, None for the Thief of the Cross

Miracle of Forgiveness, pg. 164; Another mistaken idea is that the thief on the cross was forgiven of his sins when the dying Christ answered: “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43.) These men on the cross were thieves. How could the Lord forgive a malefactor? They had broken laws. There was no doubt of the guilt of the two men, for the one voluntarily confessed their guilt. The Lord cannot save men in their sins but only from their sins, and that only when they have shown true repentance.

Introduction

Before we get into the actual “study” part of this Mentoring Handbook, I feel there is one critical point to understand about the ex-Mormon before you begin.

When I left Mormonism after thirty years, it didn’t take me long to realize that every single thing I knew in life was a lie.

Everything from food and clothing to the English language has to be re-evaluated by the person leaving the Church.  Because they have lived in a state of fear of losing salvation and sometimes jobs, families and homes which can produce paranoia, sometimes there is a great amount of confusion in their minds.  Threats, whether real or implied, have been the main meal of doctrine they’ve been fed.  In this religion the meaning of words and information from the “outside” has been twisted by leaders of the Church in order to control the members.  Being taught you will lose salvation by not belonging to their church is a threat and a scary process to have to endure.

The length of time and level of activity spent in the Church typically determines how long it’ll take to work through the exodus of Mormonism.

Exaltation

Companion to Your Study of the New Testament: The Four Gospels: pg 85; “Exaltation is a synonym for eternal life. Exaltation comes only to those who inherit the highest degree within the celestial kingdom. It is the power to have eternal increase after the resurrection; it consists in the continuation of the family unit throughout eternity; it is the type of life that is lived by our Heavenly Father.”

Joseph Smith a Mason

Evidences and Reconciliations, pg 358; “The people of the Church needed friends. The work in Nauvoo would be hindered if opposition to the Church were allowed to grow. The Prophet and his brethren and sisters of the Church had suffered much without cause. They wanted peace. Perhaps Masonry would help. So, in the light of history, ran the thoughts of the people.”

To Tell the Truth…or Not

D&C 19:31, 37; “And of tenets thou shalt not talk, but thou shalt declare repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by baptism, and by fire, yea, even the Holy Ghost.  And speak freely to all; yea, preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice, with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord God!”

Secret Societies

Evidences and Reconciliations, pg 282; “And again, I would further suggest the impropriety of the organization of bands or companies, by covenant or oaths, by penalties or secrecies; but let the time past of our experience and sufferings by the wickedness of Doctor Avard suffice and let our covenant be that of the Everlasting Covenant, as is contained in the Holy Writ and the things that God hath revealed unto us. Pure friendship always becomes weakened that very moment you undertake to make it stronger by penal oaths and secrecy. (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 146)
