July 5 – John 10:17-8; “Therefore, doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from mine, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
Nowhere in this passage of scripture does Jesus say that He only does what the Father does and will die because the Father died also. Explain to the Mormon that it is imperative to make sure you put things in context. These two things have nothing to do with each other. The following is indeed translated incorrectly.
“The scriptures inform us that Jesus said, as the Father hath power in himself, even so hath the Son power – to do what? Why, what the Father did. The answer is obvious- in a manner to lay down his body and take it up again. Jesus what are you going to do? To lay down my life as my Father did, and take it up again. Do you believe it? If you do not believe it you do not believe the Bible.” History of the Church, vol. 6, pg. 305
