History of the Church 6:411; “What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. I am the same man, and as innocent as I was fourteen years ago; and I can prove them all perjurers.” – Joseph Smith, May 1844
Leviticus 20:14; “And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness, they shall be burnt with fire both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.”
At the time of Smith’s very public statement he had more than 50 wives.
Fifteen were married to other men and stayed married to them.
There were five pairs of sisters –
Delcena & Almera Johnson
Elize * Emily Partidge
Sarah & Maria Lawrence
Mary Ann & Olive Grey Frost
Prescinda & Zina Huntington
Patty & Sylvia Sessions were mother and daughter.
