Joseph Smith & Orson Hyde’s Wife
D&C 42:22, 27; “Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else. 27 Thou shalt not speak evil of thy neighbor, nor do him any harm.”
D&C 132:61-62; “And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood—if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else. 62 And if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified.”
Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”
So which LDS scripture is the Mormon to believe? D&C 42 says one wife only and it’s pretty clear when it says “none else” don’t you think?
Now what about D&C 132? Joseph or any other LDS man can accumulate all the virgins they deem necessary for the new and everlasting covenant of the Mormon god, but what about God and what He thinks?
There’s a story to be learned from Solomon if we take the time to scope it out. All the concubines took time away from the Lord. We see this as well in his father David, who had a heart for God like no one else, but those women took time away from David’s day and each with their own thought life and opinions also added to the spirit of deception. David regretted where his lustful eyes had led him with Bathsheba and you’d think his son Solomon would’ve learned from his father’s mistakes.
Likewise, Joseph could’ve taken a lesson or two from David and Solomon. This whole scenario isn’t about the women per se, but what happens to our hearts when we allow other spiritual influences to creep in.
Another problem with Joseph’s “prophecies” about the LDS new and everlasting covenant is what he was doing with other men’s wives. Why did he send these guys out to the mission field and then marry their wives while they were out serving God? And why did he tell Kimball that if he didn’t take his 14 year old daughter to wife then the family loses their salvation or the many times he told people an angel with a flaming sword told him he had to practice polygamy or be killed. That’s a fine how do you do…
