The new reality show Breaking The Faith follows a group of young FLDS women in their quest to break free from the confines of Fundamental Mormonism. I had a chance to catch the show’s premiere Sunday, and I have to say I’m looking forward to seeing more.

October 17 – 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
Study, Research, Investigate!
I wish I had kept track of the number of times Mormons have written in to tell us that we’re wrong about the Book of Mormon.
The number one thing they all have in common is their lack of research and study time they’ve spent in their “standard works” – the Book of Mormon, D&C, and Pearl of Great Price, oh yeah and the Bible. I pray they will spend at least half the time looking into the Book of Mormon that they spend putting down the Bible. I’m convinced if this happened they’d get saved! Funny thing about the Mormon people – they’re super intelligent, but don’t want to believe they could be wrong. Their spiritual condition brought Paul’s words to life for me while studying Ephesians 6:12.
What is a Medium?
D&C 132:7; “…by revelation and commandment through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power (and I have appointed unto my servant Joseph to hold this power in the last days, and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of this priesthood are conferred)…”
Holman’s Bible Dictionary; “Medium—One possessed by (Lev. 20:22) or consulting (Deut. 18:11) a ghost or spirit of the dead, especially for information about the future. Acting as a medium was punishable by stoning (Lev. 20:27); consulting a medium, by exclusion from the congregation of Israel (Lev. 20:6). The transformation of Saul from one who expelled mediums (1 Sam. 28:3) to one who consulted a medium at En-dor (28:8-19) graphically illustrates his fall.
“The Hebrew word translated medium (ob) may refer to the spirit of a dead person, to the medium possessed by the spirit, or to images used to conjure up spirits. Manasseh made such images (2 Kings 21:6; 2 Chron. 33:6). Josiah destroyed them as part of his reforms (2 Kings 23:24). Saul’s success in quickly locating a medium (1 Sam. 28:8) points both to the popularity of the practice of consulting the dead and the difficulty of eradicating it.
“Isaiah 8:19 suggests a possible connection between the consulting of mediums and ancestor worship. Those to be consulted are termed “fathers” and “gods.” (Compare 1 Sam. 28:13 where Samuel is described as elohim or “god.”) The chirping and muttering of the spirits perhaps refers to the inarticulate sounds which must be interpreted by the medium. Consulting of mediums defiled the land and was described as prostitution. God’s people were to trust God in times of distress and not resort to other “gods” in an attempt to learn the future.”

D&C 130:8-9; “The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim. 9 This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ’s.”

Trusting God’s Word
Doctrines of Salvation 1:32; “Our Savior was a God before he was born into this world, and he brought with him that same status when he came here. He was as much a God when he was born into the world as he was before.”
In this article we’ll be looking at two subject matters; the false prophecies in Mormon scripture about Jesus being God and the reliability of the Bible. While I know that sounds rather random, hang with me and you’ll see what I mean!

April 16 – Philippians 2:5-7; “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Today I was thinking about forgiveness in the Mormon Church and if you’re a Mormon how do you obtain forgiveness. One of the easiest places to find concise definitions of what Mormons believe is in the study topics of their website. So today this is what we’ve looked at to coincide with the topic of forgiveness for murder in Mormonism.

Nations to Bow Down to Everlasting Covenant of Mormonism
D&C 49:9-12; “Wherefore, I say unto you that I have sent unto you mine everlasting covenant, even that which was from the beginning. And that which I have promised I have so fulfilled, and the nations of the earth shall bow to it; and, if not of themselves, they shall come down, for that which is now exalted of itself shall be laid low of power. 11 Wherefore, I give unto you a commandment that ye go among this people, and say unto them, like unto mine apostle of old, whose name was Peter: 12 Believe on the name of the Lord Jesus, who was on the earth, and is to come, the beginning and the end.”
The Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants Compared
Today’s dilemma is a side by side example of changes made when the Church rewrote the Book of Commandments and renamed it the Doctrine and Covenants. This particular revelation was given by Joseph Smith to Oliver Cowdery in April 1829. Cowdery, hoping God would allow him to be the scribe for Smith, asked Smith if God had any special message for him personally.

What is the everlasting covenant?
Doctrines of Salvation 1:153; “Keeping the Sabbath day holy is a covenant between man and the Lord…All of the Ten Commandments are everlasting covenants. The law of tithing is a form of an everlasting covenant, the covenant of revenue for the Church…Marriage is an everlasting covenant…The law of marriage to the Church, like the covenant of baptism, is new because it is not the marriage of the world, but for time and for all eternity. Yet this everlasting law of marriage is that which was in the beginning.”
Council of gods
D&C 121:32; “According to that which was ordained in the midst of the Council of the Eternal God of all other gods before this world was, that should be reserved unto the finishing and the end thereof, when every man shall enter into his eternal presence and into his immortal rest.”

Baptism for the Dead and being Born Again
I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again. While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.
If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?
John 3:3; “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
The Mormon Church teaches that they can’t be saved without their dead and the dead can’t be saved without members doing works for them in the temple.
D&C 128:18; “…baptism for the dead. For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect.”
So how can a dead person be born again? Remember, we’re not talking about being spiritually dead, but a literal dead person.
The Mormons I’ve spoken with have told me the person who is dead has the choice of accepting or rejecting that which was done for them in the temple. But this doesn’t answer the question so it’s something I’d keep asking them about.
I also wonder how they feel about Moroni 10:26 and 2 Nephi 9:38 in light of the Doctrine and Covenants passage listed above.
Moroni 10:26; “And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins, and they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God; and I speak it according to the words of Christ; and I lie not.”
2 Nephi 9:38; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.”

Polygamy Quotes by Mormon Leaders
Listed below are just a few of the quotes from Mormon leaders in their thoughts on polygamy. As you’ll readily see they are all for having more than one wife and believed this is the way to salvation. For more quotes, click on the link at the end of this list.
“And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.”
Joseph Smith’s Prophecies
He got one right!!! It’s not very often I get to report on finding a prophecy of Joseph Smith that he got right, but today I found one. As I was researching quotes of Joseph Smith for a new ex-Mormon I came across the prophecy he gave in Doctrines and Covenants.
Destruction of the Earth
D&C 88:87; “For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig-tree.”
