April 1837 –

Vol. 3, No. 8 Kirtland, Ohio, May, 1837. No Christian Churches on Earth for Centuries?

Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses 18:172; But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be. They say, “We have built chapels unto the name of the Lord; we call our Churches Christian Churches, they are called the Church of Christ, St. John’s Church, St. Paul’s Church, St. Peter’s Church, and after others of the ancient Apostles;” and one who had never studied the pattern which God has given of the Christian Church would almost really believe that they are Christian Churches.” – Salt Lake City, March 26, 1876

Jared

This dilemma comes from the 2nd installment of our series the Demonic and Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon.  Take a look at what the Book of Mormon teaches about the Tower of Babylon and what God says in His word.  The two examples couldn’t be more contradictory of each other.

For the next week or so we’re going to take a look at some various teachings in the Church that cause dilemmas for its members.  We’re beginning with their sacred cannon – the Book of Mormon.  Here is part of our article on the Demonic and Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon.

Angels & Handshakes

History of the Church 5:267 When a messenger comes, saying he has a message from God, offer him your hand, and request him to shake hands with you. If he be an angel he will do so, and you will feel his hand. If he be the spirit of a just man made perfect, he will come in his glory; for that is the only way he can appear. Ask him to shake hands with you, but he will not move, because it is contrary to the order of heaven for a just man to deceive; but he will still deliver his message. If it be the devil as an angel of light, when you ask him to shake hands he will offer you his hand, and you will not feel anything; you may therefore detect him. These are three grand keys whereby you may know whether any administration is from God.

Joseph Smith Bears Infirmities of Others

Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 28;Although I was called of my Heavenly Father to lay the foundation of this great work and kingdom in this dispensation, and testify of his revealed will to scattered Israel, I am subject to like passions as other men, like the prophets of olden times.Notwithstanding my weaknesses, I am under the necessity of bearing the infirmities of others, who when they get into difficulty, hang on to me tenaciously to get them out, and wish me to cover their faults. (HC 5:516.)

Mormon Terminology and Grace

2 Nephi 25:23 says; “…for we know that it is by grace we are saved, after all we can do”.

“God’s grace consists in his love, mercy, and condescension toward his children…

Grace is granted to men proportionately as they conform to the standards of personal righteousness that are part of the gospel plan. Thus the saints are commanded to “grow in grace” (D. & C. 50:40), until they are sanctified and justified…Grace is an attribute of perfection possessed by Deity (D. & C. 66:12; 84:102)… The same path to perfection is offered to man.”  Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 339.

Do Pre-existent Spirit Babies Choose Their Parents?

When I was a Mormon I was taught that I had chosen the earthly parents I would be born to while I was still a spirit in the pre-existence.  This teaching always made me wonder just how trustworthy the doctrines of the Church were if this was true.

A Woman’s Duty is to Bring Forth Spirit Babies

Journal of Discourses 4:56; Do you understand this? I have told you many times that there are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?—to prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can; hence if my women leave, I will go and search up others who will abide the celestial law…This is the reason why the doctrine of plurality of wives was revealed, that the noble spirits which are waiting for tabernacles might be brought forth.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, September 21, 1856

Five Reasons the Book of Mormon is Confusing

Especially for Missionaries, vol. 1; The purpose of the Book of Mormon is fivefold. First, it stands as a second testament or witness for Jesus Christ. Second, it authenticates the Bible. Third, it shows the goodness of God to his children. Fourth, it makes people aware of the promises that God has made to his children. And fifth, it restores to earth many plain and precious truths that have been lost since the fulness of the gospel existed.

Three Nephite Apostles Never Die

If 3 of the Nephite apostles never died then why did Joseph Smith say there wasn’t any church on the face of the earth that was obeying God?  This is a huge contradiction and makes absolutely no sense!

Introduction of 3 Nephi 28.  “Each of the twelve is granted his heart’s desire – Three elect to remain on earth until the Lord comes in his glory…They are made immune to death and disaster”.

The ex-communication of Hyram Brown

It’s a problem when the Church practices one thing while preaching another.  On Thursday, February 1, 1844 the Times and Seasons published a notice declaring one of their adherents, Hyram Brown, had “been preaching polygamy and other false and corrupt doctrines…” (Times and Seasons vol. 5, pg. 423)

Atonement

Ensign, November 2008, pg. 57; “”[The] testing of our limits in priesthood service is made necessary by God’s plan to qualify His children to live with Him again forever. Heavenly Father loves His children…To qualify us to receive that gift, He gave us a mortal body, the opportunity to be tempted to sin, and a way to be cleansed from that sin and to rise in the First Resurrection. He gave us His Beloved Son, Jehovah, as our Savior to make that possible. The Savior was born in mortal life, was tempted but never sinned, and then in Gethsemane and on Golgotha paid the price of our sins so that we could be cleansed. The purifying can come only to those who have faith enough in Jesus Christ to repent of sin, be cleansed through the ordinance of baptism, and make and keep covenants to obey all His commandments. And there was to be a fierce enemy of our souls, Lucifer, who would with his legions relentlessly try to capture every child of God to keep him or her from having the joy of eternal life.”” – Henry B. Eyring

Mormon Dilemmas 9

While doing some research on a project for the ministry it dawned on me that the Mormon Church contradicted itself in the Articles of Faith; in particular #12.  It says;

We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
