Civil War Prophecy
D&C 87:1-6; “Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls; 2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. 3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations.”
Jer. 14:14; “Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.”
Prophecy given by Smith on December 25, 1832.
The Mormons like to use this passage as proof that Joseph Smith had a prophecy that came true.
Fact: this passage in the D&C is a false prophecy. In verse 2 it says that war will be poured out on all nations. This never happened.

History does not agree with you.

Fred –
Wars were not poured out on other nations because of the Civil War.
(Wars were not poured out on other nations because of the Civil War)
Re read and you will see that the Civil War is only the starting place for many wars, and not the cause of all the wars, as you say.
Let us look at the first four verses to see the accuracy of this prophecy.
“beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina”
First state to sucede.
“which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls”
According to statistics, the US Civil War had more casualties than any other war, totalling over percent of the total populaiton. It also resulted in the period of reconstruction, in which there was great suffering.
“And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.”
This is just my memory, but in the early nineties I remember a big news story that proclaimed that for the first time since the Civil War there was no war being fought anywhere in the world.
“For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States”
Obviously.
“the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called”
Happened.
“and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations”
I am not well versed in the wars of England, but I think this is seen in the Boxer Rebelion in China that started in1899, as well as the two World Wars.
“and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.”
See Fred’s list. Also, look at this list of British Wars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_wars. Similar lists can be found of all nations.
“And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters”
Reminds me of India’s fight for Independence, as well as the many struggles since the sivil war of oppressed people fighting against oppressors.
“who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.”
As a description of the masters of slaves, I can’t think of a better way to described the British military in comparison to their many colonies.
It is actually astonishing how accurate this prophecy really is, and the rest of it just needs a little time.
It’s amazing at how far Mormons are willing to stretch the words of Joseph to make them say want they want when it’s convenient for them. 🙁 – Melissa G.
In what way does any of this prophecy not say what we have explained?
“…rest of it just needs a little time…” This is not so. There is no proof in the Bible of this. Is that your FINAL ANSWER to the prophesies in Mormonism, “…needs a little more time …”?
There are plenty of prophecies in the Bible that have begun to be fulfilled, but are not yet complete. Among them are the gathering of Israel, which has begun but still needs a little more time to complete.
The rest of this prophecy from Joseph Smith is describing the final wars that will happen just prior to the Second Coming, all of which culminate in the great Battle of Armagedon that many prophets have prophecies of. To see the completion of this prophecy will take more time; but we are in the middle of it right now.
