Apostates: Leave or Die
Journal of Discourses 1:83; “I say, rather than that apostates should flourish here, I will unsheath [sic] my bowie knife, and conquer or die. [Great commotion in the congregation, and a simaltaneous [sic] burst of feeling, assenting to the declaration.] Now, you nasty apostates, clear out, or judgment will be put to the line, and righteousness to the plummet. [Voices, generally, “go it, go it.”] If you say it is right, raise your hands. [All hands up.] Let us call upon the Lord to assist us in this, and every good work.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 27, 1853
Romans 12:19; “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
What apostle in the Bible ever said such things? And what about Jesus – can you imagine Him saying this?
Again, while the average Mormon probably hasn’t heard of the things Mr. Young or other early Mormon leaders said in this genre, the spirit of their hatred was carried on down through the generations.
