Eternal Life and Immortality
Easter Thoughts – Marion Romney – Ensign May 1975, pg. 82; “Man’s soul is thus assured of immortality. Christ has completed the first part of his “work and … glory [which he declared to Moses was]—to bring to pass the immortality and [the] eternal life of man.” (Moses 1:39.)
Great is the debt we owe to our Redeemer for our resurrection. But this is not the final goal. Attaining to immortality is a prerequisite to, but it is not necessarily the same as attaining eternal life. Immortality denotes length of life—deathless. Eternal life denotes quality of life—the quality of life God enjoys.”
1 Tim 6:14-16; “That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.”
Also see Romans 2:6-7; “Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life.”
Paul gave us a concise definition of eternal life and immortality in the passage above. The Jews were well aware the only one who is immortal is God Himself.
Our immortality comes after death and is given to us from the Lord. Those who don’t believe in the Lord will not inherit eternal life, but are subject to being separated from Him for eternity.
Once again another Mormon leader has taken a little bit of truth to spread a lie.
Eternal life is indeed referring to the quality of life. Eternal life is experienced in mortal existence by those living in a covenant relationship here and now with the Lord. This carries with it the understanding we will never be separated from Him and knowing we are being renewed each day.
Only mortals are subject to sin (Romans 6:12), decay (1 Cor 15:53-54) and death (2 Cor. 4:11). Therefore showing us that only God is immortal and not humans as this man has erroneously taught.
Notice also in his speech the innuendo that Jesus didn’t accomplish all that is needed for man to attain salvation. He’s obviously left the door open to the idea we must work for the gift Jesus already purchased for us and the only thing Jesus accomplished in his death and resurrection was making it possible for us to have immortality. Shame….
