Nephi & Isaiah
2 Nephi 12:4; “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares, and their spears into pruning-hooks—nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
Isaiah 2:4; “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
How many plagiarisms make your message ineffective?
Pruning hooks, plows, spears and swords were unknown tools in the Old World. Farming, vineyards and gardening weren’t part of the lifestyle anywhere in the Americas before the time of Columbus so they’re about 2,000 years off for this type of vocabulary.
This passage really doesn’t have any significant meaning for the Nephite people at the time Nephi supposedly wrote this. The only other “nation” they knew of was Nephi’s younger brothers who he wasn’t getting along with at the time. They hadn’t even broken up into different groups yet.
One more thing – if they were hammering or carving or whatever they were doing to inscribe their messages onto the golden plates why are they using all their time and materials in reproducing the writings of Isaiah if they already had his writings with them?
