Testing for Truth
Moroni 10:4-6; “And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. 5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. 6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.”
1 John 4:1-3; “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”
Truth is not subjective and is always absolute, thus making it virtually impossible to rely upon the test from the book of Moroni. Would your Mormon friend rely upon this test to determine the truthfulness of the Koran? If this test is true it should work in all situations.
Notice the wording in verse two of John’s epistle. He that confesses Jesus has come in the flesh…
The Mormon Church declares that Jesus is the Son “after the manner of the flesh”. In other words, they’ve openly confessed they don’t accept He is God incarnate. The phrase “after the manner of the flesh” means they believe Jesus was created through a sexual union between God and Jesus’ mother, the virgin Mary. Here we can take guidance from John they’re not one of us.
The Mormon Jesus is much like the Jesus that the false teacher Cerinthus tried to pass off. This man was a known heretic who lived circa 100 AD and Gnostic. He believed Jesus’ “Christhood” didn’t come to him until he was baptized. Cerinthus was inspired by angelic visitations and also believed God was actually a demiurge who organized elements but wasn’t the Supreme Being.
Cerinthus is one of the false teachers the apostle John was referencing in his epistles.
Like King Solomon said; “There’s nothing new under the sun…”
