The Predicament of Mormon “Revelations”
D&C and Church History Seminary Teaching Resource Manual, pg 7; “In order to become like God, we must have a resurrected, glorified physical body and we must grow to possess the attributes of godhood (see Alma 11:43–44; Job 19:26; 3 Nephi 27:27; D&C 130:22).”
Journal of Discourses 9:138; “The Father frequently came to visit his son Adam, and talked and walked with him; and the children of Adam were more or less acquainted with their Grandfather, and their children were more or less acquainted with their Great-Grandfather; and the things that pertain to God and to heaven were as familiar among mankind…” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, January 12, 1862
2 Thess. 2:1-4; “Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
Our time on earth is limited and is but a vapor in the scheme of things. But the good news is that we’re created by the Lord and given many opportunities to respond to His voice – whether or not we choose to heed His call is another matter. For today I want to share insights from a sermon I recently heard and compare it with the LDS teachings we see here today.
Mormons are in a predicament. I am often told, and recently so, by Mormons the idea of godhood status isn’t a staple of the Mormon teachings. Not only are their claims incongruous with what I see every day in Mormon literature, but purposefully misleading as well. Let me explain.
The two LDS teachings both come from the two most beloved prophets in all of Mormondom; that being Joseph Smith and Brigham Young respectively. The teaching from Smith is pretty clear and clearer still is how it’s being taught to the Mormon youth today (2013). Take a close look at where I retrieved my info from.
The second teaching is an example of how they’ve purposefully added another false teaching to their first false teaching to further complicate and confuse the minds of those who believe this stuff.
Young’s theory of having family around all the time with parents, grandparents and great-grandparents is one of those feel-good moments the Church wants you to have with no basis on reality and what God says. They in turn will tell the listening audience that they’ll know all these things in the hereafter so anything we don’t understand today will all be explained later on.
They’re right about that – they will indeed find out.
If God is visiting Adam (which He did) and let’s say visiting Seth, Abel and Cain (which we don’t have proof of) wouldn’t God be their father as well (which God says He is)? How did God become a grandpa and great-grandpa?
While our time may be limited, we do have time to ask questions because we know from His word that He listens. In the sermon I mentioned earlier one of my pastors preached on Romans 8:26-27 along with Hebrew 5:7. Let’s take a quick look at those before we go on.
Romans 8:26-27; “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
Hebrews 5:7; “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard….”
If God took time out of His schedule to listen to Jesus don’t you think He’d make time for your questions today? And if the Holy Spirit who indwells each believer (saints) and makes intercession on our behalf, wouldn’t it stand to reason God would listen to the Holy Spirit residing in us who petitions on our behalf? I can’t imagine God would ignore Himself…
If we want to know the truth He will manifest it to us. Remember, Jesus told us that we will know the truth and it will set us free! John 8:32. If we want to know Him, He will be sure we do because He’s provided the way! The very essence of His name – Emmanuel – means God with us!
Sadly for the Mormons they’ve been taught the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) isn’t a constant companion. For the record, that is a lie!…
Christianity is unique in the sense that it’s the only “religion” if you will, where God places Himself in the midst of our troubles here on earth. Jesus is proof of that and subsequently so is the Holy Spirit! No other faith has a god who does this. No other god inserts himself into the middle of chaotic humanity in order to assist and come alongside mankind! Only the God of the Bible has done this and only the God of the Bible is capable of doing this!
So where does the Mormon go when/if they have questions? Nowhere according to the leaders; they must accept things on faith.
