Kolob Time
Abraham 5:13; “But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the time that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Now I, Abraham, saw that it was after the Lord’s time, which was after the time of Kolob; for as yet the Gods had not appointed unto Adam his reckoning.”
Psalm 90:4; “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.”
2 Peter 3:8; “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
Okay so we understand that a thousand years to us is but one day to the Lord, but exactly what is Kolob time?
And where does it say this in the Bible?
Of all the things in Mormonism that are confusing and don’t even makes sense, planet Kolob takes the prize.
I’ve some questions:
Was Smith involved in science fiction, as well as, all the other things he dabbled in?
In your experience in the church, when did you find out about this Kolob or hear about it? Was it during the temple rites of in the regular services, instruction, etc.?
I ask this as it’s known that the going deeper in the involvement in LDS (going to the temple, etc.) is when and where many other things are found out. Much is not told in the beginning leading the unbeliever in Mormonism on.
Hi Sue!
You’re right, the majority of LDS teachings aren’t known by those who are new to their faith. Although, Kolob is spoken about in the book of Abraham which is in the Pearl of Great Price. The Pearl of Great Price is part of their standard works of scripture.
Being born and raised in the Church, I always knew about Kolob – I wouldn’t be able to tell you how old I was when I first heard about it but it’s common knowledge for all by the time you go to school.
As for when a new convert might learn about it…
It would all depend on when they join. The Church has a standard system of lessons they teach from. For instance they can have a plan to teach on the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, etc, typically these last for a year at a time. If/when you join and they’re focusing on those particular books you’ll obviously learn about it with the others. Otherwise, it’ll be up to you to discover it on your own. The teaching of Kolob isn’t hidden per se, but it isn’t something they focus on a lot either. If you’re a member you’ll be carrying the book of Abraham around with you every week you attend church. Or someone might mention it in a talk, etc.
The 4 standard works are a compilation of the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. They refer to this as their “quad” or back in the “olden days” (i.e. my time frame) they called them 3-in-1. This is one book like the quad, but without the Bible.
Kolob wasn’t anything I could ever grasp in concept. It seemed so outlandish to me (still does!) and I couldn’t ever find any reference to in the Bible so I eventually gave up on that theory. Wow, I wonder why!
