Ensign, “Prepare for Blessings of the Temple”, March 2002, pg 17; “Church members who have been clothed with the garment in the temple have made a covenant to wear it throughout their lives. This has been interpreted to mean that it is worn as underclothing both day and night.
“The promise of protection and blessings is conditioned upon worthiness and faithfulness in keeping the covenant. Members of the Church wear the garment as a reminder of the sacred covenants they have made with the Lord and also as a protection against temptation and evil. How it is worn is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.” – Russell Nelson

The temple garment cannot protect anyone from physical harm even if you’re doing everything you should be doing in the Mormon temples. Sadly this year alone (as of 10/12/2013) proves that this man’s statement isn’t true as 12 Mormon missionaries have lost their lives to disease or in tragic accidents while serving on missions or while getting ready to serve their mission.
Folklore stories of people being saved from burning buildings because they wore their garments have been a staple diet of Mormons since Smith was shot and killed in Nauvoo. A few LDS leaders stated Joseph was killed because he mistakenly forgot his garments that day.
What I find sad is the way they phrased what the garment means – it sounds a lot like what a Christian says about baptism.
Mormon reason for the garment:
“How it is worn is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Lord”.
Christian explanation for baptism;
“An outward expression for the internal commitment made to follow Jesus Christ”.
Since Christian baptisms have been around a lot longer than Mormon garments it’s not difficult to figure out where they came up with that.
