Mormon Dilemma 907 Slavery is of God

The Essential Joseph Smith, pp 87-90; “The fact is inconvertible, that the first mention we have of slavery, is found in the Holy Bible, pronounced by a man who was perfect in his generation, and walked with God.

And so far from that prediction being averse from the mind of God, it remains as a lasting monument to the decree of Jehovah, to the shame and confusion of all who have cried out against the South, in consequence of their holding the sons of Ham in servitude! “And he said, Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.”

. . . The curse is not yet taken off from the sons of Canaan . . . those who are determined to pursue a course, which shows an opposition, and a feverish restlessness against the designs of the Lord, will learn when perhaps too late, for their own good, that God can do His own work, without the aid of those who are not directed by His Counsel.

This is so perfectly plain, that I see no need of comment. The Scripture stands for itself; and I believe that these men were better qualified to teach the will of God, than all the Abolitionists in the world”. – April 1836

Acts 10:34-35; “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him”.

Exodus 21:16; “And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death”.

Every nation is accepted with Him.

I take that to mean ALL nations no matter your ethnicity or color.  PTL!

I’ve used the words of Joseph Smith today in response to many of the e-mails I receive telling me that Smith wasn’t racist and the views of the Church changed after his death. All we have to do is look at the works Smith produced to see that he indeed was racist.

The sad part of this is the other lie he told that’s couched in this quote. He’s saying slavery was based on skin color and this is a lie.

Slavery in the Bible took place based on a few reasons, but skin color never had anything to do with it.

Slavery was a result of one nation taking over another. The citizens of the lesser nation would be taken as slaves many times. Many people and nations were captured as slaves because of the gods they worshiped.

Slavery was also voluntary many times. People would submit themselves into slavery because of debt. When they didn’t have family who they could rely upon during financial hardships they’d submit themselves to the person they were indebted to in order to pay off that debt.
