Ether 9:18; “And also all manner of cattle, of oxen, and cows, and of sheep, and of swine, and of goats, and also many other kinds of animals which were useful for the food of man.”
Leviticus 11:7; “And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.”
Now with this verse in Ether the Mormon might try and tell you the Jaredites weren’t technically Jewish.
The problem here is that they’ve always claimed the Jaredites were practicing Jews who followed the gospel in 2,000 BC, alas, that’s for another day. The point here is twofold – or rather the points today are twofold!
1.The Israelites were commanded by God not to eat pork and even though Leviticus wasn’t written until well after the Tower of Babel and the Jaredites, they should’ve known this if they had access to the writings of the Old and New Testaments!
2.The first time swine was known to be on the American continent is when they were transported here by the Spanish Conquistadors in 1493. That’s about 3,500 years after the Jaredites! See our article on Book of Mormon Artifacts & Metallurgy for more info.
