God Will Love When We Obey

Friend, ‘Abide with Me,’ August 2014; “The Savior loves us, and He invites us to be close to Him. He said, “Be faithful and diligent in keeping the commandments of God, and I will encircle thee in the arms of my love” (D&C 6:20). I often feel the joy of coming closer to the Savior through simple acts of obedience to the commandments.” – Henry B. Erying

John 14:23; “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him”.

The emotions Mr. Eyring is experiencing is called pride, not God’s love.

The passage from John’s gospel was one of the first things I discovered after becoming a Christian and has comforted me many times throughout the years.  Let’s look at what Jesus said and compare it to Mr. Eyring’s counsel.

Jesus said if a man loves Him he’ll keep the Lord’s commandments.

The reason this happens is because of God’s Holy Spirit residing inside man. As Christians we’re prompted all day every day, to seek His will and obey Him.

Jesus said that when this happens He and the Father comes to him to make their abode with him. The transliteration of abode is monē and it means to stay or make a residence or mansion, to tarry.

The Mormons have this all backwards. Your behavior means nothing to Him until you’ve accepted His Son Jesus as your Savior and God.   You can’t behave your way into heaven for if that was true many people who don’t believe in Jesus will be there as well because they were nice!

The Mormon Holy Ghost isn’t omnipresent and therefore cannot be compelled to stick around if he doesn’t see fit to do so. D&C 130:22-23.

It sounds as if Mr. Eyring is subverting God’s word in a passive-aggressive malicious manner. He’s chosen to twist God’s word to malign Him and control the youth group in Mormonism.
