Answers to Gospel Questions 3:142, 144; “The fact that there is no reference to a mother in heaven either in the Bible, Book of Mormon or Doctrine and Covenants, is not sufficient proof that no such thing as a mother did exist there. . .Is it not feasible to believe that female spirits were created in the image of a ‘Mother in Heaven’?” – Joseph Fielding Smith
Jeremiah 7:18-20; “The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. 19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces? 20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.”
Circa BC 586 the prophet Jeremiah prophesied to the children of God warning them of their impending doom because of their idolatry. For many years they had involved entire families to participate in the practice of worshiping and paying homage to the ‘Queen of Heaven’ who was also known as Ishtar, Ashtoreth or Astarte depending on the group who was worshiping.
This false goddess was believed to be the consort of Molech and/or Ba’al. She was worshiped because they believed she held reproductive powers which at this time was an important issue to women. It didn’t matter how many times God called them to stop worshiping her or through whom He used to send His warnings, their disobedience persisted to the very bitter end when Jerusalem was eventually sacked by the Babylonians.
Their behavior reminds me of what Mr. Smith said in our example today. It didn’t matter that he couldn’t find the term mother in heaven in the Bible he had chosen to go his own way with his own ideas.
Today Mormons are reenacting the very things the Israelites were doing 2,600 years ago. The entire theme of ‘families are forever’ and ‘heavenly mother’ are nothing but repackaged lies with a shiny new bow.
While Jeremiah’s prophecy is a past prophecy, we can learn what God does and doesn’t approve of and apply it to our lives today! A queen of heaven or mother in heaven is all the same. She doesn’t exist. There is only One God and there is no other and He’s not married – Isaiah 44:6.
