General Conference, ‘Approaching the Throne of God with Confidence’, October 2014; “Become really, really good at repenting thoroughly and quickly. Because the Atonement of Jesus Christ is very practical, you should apply it generously 24/7, for it never runs out. Embrace the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance as things that are to be welcomed and applied daily according to the Great Physician’s orders. Establish an attitude of ongoing, happy, joyful repentance by making it your lifestyle of choice. In doing so, beware of the temptation to procrastinate, and don’t expect the world to cheer you on. Keeping your eyes on the Savior, care more about what He thinks of you, and let the consequences follow. Spiritual confidence increases when you voluntarily and joyfully repent of sins, both small and great, in real time by applying the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” – Jörg Klebingat
1 Corinthians 1:18-19; “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Here’s our second post/dilemma on the speech delivered by Mr. Klebingat.
Melissa alerted me to the speech Mr. Klebingat gave at the LDS General Conference last week and offered her thoughts so with her permission I’m sharing them!
“Question: How do you become really, really good at repenting thoroughly when we’re told there is no one that’s good, no not one?!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I hate it when they talk about the Atonement as though it’s an itch cream they need to “apply” as needed.”
I had to laugh at her assessment, but it is indeed quite outlandish that grown-ups would speak in such a manner. This church uses the word atonement without any spiritual attachment to it and do so openly because they’ve rejected the cross. Pastor Alistair Begg once said ‘when you take your eyes off the cross you lose your way in the Bible’.
How is the atonement of Christ ‘very practical’?
What does that mean?
How does one go about ‘applying the atonement generously’?
What does the phrase ‘the atonement never runs out’ mean?
What is spiritual confidence and why would we want it to increase? John 3:30 says ‘He must increase, but I must decrease’ which is reminding us that we should know our place.
When a Mormon uses terminology like that it typically implies there is a pride associated with it.
We’re going to be focusing on this subject a lot more in the near future. Jesus’ death on the cross happened because of our sin. It was a brutal, ugly, defiling event our Lord went through because of God’s love for us, but in no way are we ever to dismiss the blood as Mormons have done.
