Our Lord is an amazing God, and has performed countless mighty works. Proof of how amazing He is can be seen in His creation of the universe, to providing lessons for us in His word that He’s single-handedly kept intact for thousands of years.

Sea Currents –

Matthew Maury (1806-1873), the ‘father of oceanography’ read something in his bible that piqued his interest. Being an avid student of the Bible, he read in Psalm 8:8 there are ‘paths in the sea’, and so he set out to discover them.

The author of numerous books on oceanography, Maury hypothesized there had to be a northwest passage in the seas. He also put forth the idea the North Pole had to be free of ice on occasion based on reports in sea logs from whalers of captured whales that were found with harpoons in them. This would’ve been impossible if the North Pole was always iced over. He knew whales were mammals and needed to come up for air, which they wouldn’t be able to do if there weren’t ice-free areas.

Flowers –

As of 2010, botanists have identified more than 400,000 different species of flowers, most of which aren’t safe to eat. After realizing there were many duplicates in earlier estimates of 1,000,000 individual species, they collaborated together to identify the 400,000+ number, and announced each of these are distinct from each other.

How could so many varieties of flowers evolve out of nowhere? Believers know and understand the Lord created each one individually, and did so just for our benefit! (Image taken at Revelstoke, BC 2012)

Earth –

As you probably already know, the earth is an amazing place! Here are some mind bending facts –

Its circumference is over 8,000 miles, with an estimated mass of roughly 6.6×1,021 tons, and is 93 million miles away from the sun.

The deepest known point in Earth’s oceans is the Mariana Trench which plummets to 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) below sea level. Geology.com noted the following about the Marianas; ‘If Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water’.

Men didn’t know there were mountains in the sea until 100 years ago, but God mentioned it, and even Jonah knew about them 600 years before Christ! Jonah 2:5-6

With so many things to do and see, no one is able to experience or visit everything God has made in an entire lifetime. Although in 3^rd grade I always believed my teacher, Mrs. Johnson, had seen it all. (She traveled to over 100 countries!)

Planet Earth: Plan or Accident?

EARTH’S SURFACE TEMPERATURE

The most important factor affecting the surface temperature of the earth is obviously the distance from the sun. If the earth were moved a few million miles closer to the sun, the surface of the earth would become warmer causing our glaciers to melt. With a decrease in the area of ice the total reflectivity of our planet’s surface would thereby decrease and more of the sun’s heat would be absorbed. The melting of glaciers would produce a rise of sea level, and, apart from flooding most of our modern cities, would create a larger total ocean surface area. Since seawater absorbs larger amounts of solar radiation than equal area land masses, heating of the earth would again be promoted. Furthermore, after increasing the temperature of the oceans, much of the ocean’s dissolved carbon dioxide would be added to the atmosphere along with large amounts of water due to increased evaporation. The increased carbon dioxide and water vapor level of the atmosphere would again bring about a significant temperature rise. All things considered, a minor decrease in the sun’s distance would have a drastic heating effect on the earth’s surface.

What would happen if the earth were a few million miles farther from the sun? The reverse of the previous situation applies. We would have more of our planet covered by ice, with associated increased reflectivity of the sun’s heat. The ocean would cover less of the earth’s surface and the important process of absorption of heat by seawater would be decreased. Since the ocean would be colder, evaporation would be less with less heat-trapping water vapor in the atmosphere. Much of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere would become dissolved in the colder ocean. Calculations show that a decrease of carbon dioxide in the air to just one-half of its present level would lower the average temperature of the earth’s surface by about 7.0 degrees Fahrenheit! Thus, increasing the sun’s distance would have a profound cooling effect on our planet.

From this discussion we see that the earth is just the proper distance from the sun to maintain the right surface temperature suitable for life and the many important geologic processes! To the evolutionist the distance of the earth from the sun is a strange accident, but to the creationist it is a marvelous testimony of God’s planning.

Bible Reliability –

The Lord has provided able bodied teachers of His word to serve the body of Christ, and one of the best was Professor Joseph P. Free who loved God with all his heart. He served tirelessly as an archaeologist from 1935 to 1974, and used his talent as a means to teach others and witness. You can read a memorial for him in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, pp. 65-66.

From his well renowned book in 1954, he made the following observations about God’s word –

Archaeology and Bible History, p. 114; “…archaeology has confirmed countless passages which have been rejected by critics as unhistorical or contradictory to known facts…Yet archaeological discoveries have shown that these critical charges…are wrong and that the Bible is trustworthy in the very statements which have been set aside as untrustworthy…We do not know of any cases where the Bible has been proved wrong.” – Dr. Joseph P. Free

Trusting God’s Word

As children of the Most High God, we can turn to the Bible knowing the words we’re reading mean what they say.  We can know they aren’t used as a catch phrase containing some hidden meaning behind them. Luke 8:16-17 Always having secret meanings doesn’t set you apart because you belong to God; rather, it sets you apart because it’s not from God.

Looking at internal and external evidences of the Bible, proves His word is trustworthy. We must examine all evidences, both for and against the Bible, in making our determinations.

Tossing evidence aside that doesn’t agree with our points of view is as dangerous as hating someone because of their race. It’s not logical, nor is it an intelligent thing to do in life. As we read His word and learn about Him, we can readily find there’s nothing in the Bible that has proven to be false.

Bible Facts –

From our Mentoring Handbook, Chapter 7, The Truth about the Bible –

The Bible is God-breathed, “theopneustos”. 2 Tim. 3:16  By the power of the Holy Spirit words were written down on papyri while God used each individual’s personality, and writing style to give mankind His Law and reveal Himself to us.

It’s is a compilation of 66 books, written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, written by more than forty authors in three continents, over the span of more than 1,500 years. It is by far, the most read book in the history of mankind.

There are 333 prophecies in the Bible, 48 of which are in Isaiah chapter 53 alone!  The odds of all those prophecies coming to fruition are staggering, yet that’s exactly what God did!  Fulfilling just 48 of 61 of the prophecies concerning Jesus are 1 in 10¹⁵⁷.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947 by a Qumran shepherd boy, taught scholars no changes were necessary to the KJV Bible.  The Bible is 99.9% textually pure.  (Depending on the source, this figure ranges anywhere from 95% to 99.9%; I use the 99.9% figure based on the largest consensus of experts that I’m familiar with).  The remaining .01% has no affect on doctrine.

…The original texts were written either by the author’s own hand, or a scribe under their supervision.  The markings or letters, are known as jots and tittles.  If even one of these were written down incorrectly the entire page would be torn up and thrown away (usually burned), and they would have to begin all over again.  It was an incredibly tedious work!  Pastor Floyd McElveen wrote;

“More than 25,000 sites have been excavated verifying the existence of cities, kings, kingdoms events, officials, etc., proving the historicity and incredible accuracy of thousands of Biblical references.  Archaeologist Nelson Glueck has said, “It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.”” (Evidence You Never Knew Existed, pg. 8).
