In our last look at Ms. Burton’s talk on how to draw closer to God, we see how she quoted from D&C 6:12 which says you shouldn’t trifle with sacred things. The lesson here, she said, is to accept what God has said and don’t try to change things because His words are sacred.
Ask the Mormon if they find anything odd in her statement. The entire reason Mormonism is in existence is because Joe Smith ‘trifled’ with God’s word.

“Trifle not with sacred things” (D&C 6:12). Individuals must recognize that revelation from the Lord is a sacred trust, Sister Burton taught. Quoting from Elder Richard G. Scott, Sister Burton said, “Inspiration carefully recorded shows God that His communications are sacred to us. … Such recording … should be protected from loss or intrusion by others.”
