Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Utah’s annual celebration of Brigham Young declaring ‘This is the Place’ is in full swing this weekend with the customary parades, fireworks, green jell-o. and rodeos. Utah spares no expense with each community from Brigham City to St. George, pulling out all the stops in remembrance of the ‘Days of ‘47’.
Looking over the numerous calendars of events for this year, and floats from last year, we noticed they’re still missing one major item. We saw floats with remakes of seagulls eating crickets, cowboy boots, covered wagons, beehives and temples. There’s even a float with an oversized I-pod with a message, ‘Listen to a Prophet’s Voice’.
We finally found a float from 1983 with a globe representing the world, and a message ‘For God so Loved the World’. It was one of three we found from the hundreds of floats highlighting the efforts of pioneers of the 19th century. The time, money, and effort these things took to complete was surely extensive, yet nothing about Jesus exclusively, or a cross, could be found.
For a religion insisting they’re Christian, it’s certainly odd Jesus still didn’t get an honorable mention, or even a how-do-you-do. I don’t want to demean the efforts of those who took part in the trek west. I do want to point out however, the outcome of their journey didn’t provide eternal life.
The efforts of celebrating what they have are grossly misplaced. The only two things the trek of 1847 provided were a short reprieve from the trouble they caused in Illinois, and a place to hide their sin of polygamy in the Utah mountains. Today, it only serves as another way to worship people like Brigham Young.
Our prayer request this year is the same as it was for last year! Pray that while they’re applauding Brigham, they’d wonder why no one is focused on their church’s namesake.
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
