1 Peter 1:25; “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
The other day, Melissa noted in an article how the Church said the Book of Mormon was meant for people living now. This reminded me of a few comments made by past LDS leaders who didn’t give the Bible the same credit, so we have a few questions in light of their warnings!
Take a quick look at what Joe Smith and Orson Hyde said about God’s word –
Joseph Smith, The Choice Seer, p. 25; “We have no right, he explained, to lay claim to promises made to another people in another time. – Joseph Smith
Journal of Discourses 2:75-76; “The words contained in this Bible are merely a history of what is gone by; it was never given to guide the servant of God in the course he should pursue, any more than the words and commandments of God, given to a generation under one set of circumstances, would serve for another generation under another set of circumstances…The Bible is not a sufficient guide; it is only the history of the people who lived 1800 years ago. The history of our Church in this day, presents the scenes and transactions of this people—the revelations and words of God to them…” – Orson Hyde, Salt Lake City, October 6, 1854
Why would they say this when Jesus quoted from the Bible, and did so quite often? He even promised us His words would never pass away. Furthermore, if Jesus used OT scripture as a guide, why shouldn’t we use it today?
Matthew 24:35; “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
Complicating this even more, if the Bible was only meant for those living at that time, why pray tell, would Mormons use the Book of Mormon today? Their excuses for rejecting the Bible are illogical, at best.
Also, why is there a double standard? Melissa noted the words of the latest apostle, Gary Stevenson (see reference here), which immediately brought Jesus’ words to mind.
John 13:20 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
So according to Jesus, if they’ve rejected the Bible, it can only mean one thing… they’ve rejected Him.
