2 Timothy 1:12 ‘…for I know whom I have believed…’
Prophets, ‘True to the Faith’, (2004), 129–30
While looking over the Church’s website, LDS.org, I’ve noticed a recurring theme in the last few months. Not that they haven’t pounded their message of following the prophet before, but as of late, it seems to be with a new urgency of sorts.
One of the main teaching manuals they use even today is ‘Prophets, True to the Faith’. We decided to have a look at this to find out what it says, and what, if any insights, it contains to lead someone into having a stronger walk and relationship with the Lord.
Before we look at the three quotes pulled from the teaching manual, I’d like to share a contrasting visual to ponder.
Not long after Kirk (my husband) became a Christian, he attended a men’s retreat at our church. At the next Sunday’s sermon, the pastor shared stories of what transpired at the men’s weekend away. One of their events gave me pause then, just as the memories of it still do today.
The men all stood up and sang with their loudest voices, ‘You Are A Strong Tower’. The Christian hymn is based on Proverbs 18:10 which says; “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”
I can still hear their deep voices singing they run to the Lord for safety, and reminded of this each time I see the Mormon Church declare there’s safety in listening to their prophet. The Lord tells us there’s safety in running to Him, and the Church tells you there’s safety in the guy at the pulpit… We ask: whom do you believe?
Now for the quotes we pulled from their teaching manual…
‘As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to be led by living prophets—inspired men called to speak for the Lord, just as Moses, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, Nephi, Mormon, and other prophets of the scriptures.’
Members may think this, but as noted earlier, God said just the opposite! God’s name is where the safety lies, not the name of the Mormon Church, or the name of those who serve within it.
‘Like the prophets of old, prophets today testify of Jesus Christ and teach His gospel. They make known God’s will and true character. They speak boldly and clearly, denouncing sin and warning of its consequences. At times, they may be inspired to prophesy of future events for our benefit.’
The Bible does this each and every day. All one has to do is open it up and begin reading! The difference here is that God’s word never changes, whereas, the Church’s doctrines are renowned for doing just that.
‘You can always trust the living prophets. Their teachings reflect the will of the Lord, who declared: “What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same” (D&C 1:38).’
How can you trust the prophet when he denounced a previous prophet? Brigham Young taught things the Church no longer adheres to, and like someone on our FB page said the other day, ‘those people went to their graves believing him’.
‘Your greatest safety lies in strictly following the word of the Lord given through His prophets, particularly the current President of the Church. The Lord warns that those who ignore the words of the living prophets will fall (see D&C 1:14–16). He promises great blessings to those who follow the President of the Church…’
Temporal blessings in life are nothing. They’re temporary. They don’t add to a strong believe and understanding of God simply because the focus is redirected to what the prophet says.
Jesus told us in Matthew 10:28 not to fear those who can kill the body, but to fear God. Their lord isn’t the God of the Bible, nor is he the Jesus of the Bible. Their appetite is their god, and it’s insatiable. The only time the LDS prophets deal with LDS prophecies is when they have to retract them. Think polygamy, the race issue, and Adam-God doctrine.
We’ll be gathering all the ‘follow the prophet’ quotes in the next few weeks and supply our readers with our findings, so be on the lookout!
Most of all, don’t forget to pray always for those trapped in the nightmare of Mormonism! The e-mails we’re receiving are repeatedly telling us the same thing lately – PTL! People are finding Jesus, and gaining freedom as they leave the Church. Thank You Jesus!
