Journal of Discourses 6:180-181; “The next man who came on to the carpet wanted to know how many wives brother Brigham had. I replied… ‘I will guess, if that will do you any good….he has some fifty or sixty.’” – Ezra T. Benson, Great Salt Lake City, January 24, 1858
1 Timothy 3:2; “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach.”
Benson’s guess wasn’t all that far off…In 1868, Brigham Young was married to 49 women when LDS Apostle Ezra T. Benson, guessed at the number of women Brigham had wed. At the time they settled in Utah (July 1847), Young had been married 43 times.
Our questions for today are pretty simple. Be sure to ask the Mormon you know for their opinion –
Where does the Bible say having a harem of women is sanctioned by God?
Why wasn’t anyone questioning this man’s behavior?
