Witnessing Tip of the Day September 2

September 2 – BoM Contradictions. Romans 16:18; “For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”

Ask your Mormon friend or loved one why God would tell Joseph Smith there would be three witnesses to the Book of Mormon and then change his mind. In the two verses following this god’s instruction, we find there can be countless other witnesses in addition to the original three.

What was the purpose of telling him there would only be three witnesses? Furthermore, we also see other disparities when it comes to these witnesses. The March 19, 1831 Palmyra Reflector published results of an interview they conducted of the 3 witnesses about their experience on seeing the BoM, that included David Whitmer, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. Each of the testimonies contradicted the other, discrediting the whole. If you’re on a jury you’d want to hear three different eye witness accounts of the same experience, not three stories that contradict themselves.

Can the Mormon trust what his/her god said? What about the conflicting testimonies of the witnesses?

2 Nephi 27:12; “Wherefore, at that day when the book shall be delivered unto the man of whom I have spoken, the book shall be hid from the eyes of the world, that the eyes of none shall behold it save it be that three witnesses shall behold it, by the power of God, besides him to whom the book shall be delivered; and they shall testify to the truth of the book and the things therein.”

2 Nephi 27:13-14; “And there is none other which shall view it, save it be a few according to the will of God, to bear testimony of his word unto the children of men; for the Lord God hath said that the words of the faithful should speak as if it were from the dead. 14 Wherefore, the Lord God will proceed to bring forth the words of the book; and in the mouth of as many witnesses as seemeth him good will he establish his word; and wo be unto him that rejecteth the word of God!”
