Life of Joseph the Prophet, p. 514; “It has been my intention for a long time,” he said, “to take up this subject and lay it clearly before the people, and show what my faith is in relation to this interesting matter. And if it rains I will preach this doctrine, for the truth shall be preached. I will preach the plurality of Gods. I have selected this text for that express purpose. I wish to declare, I have always and in all congregations, when I have preached on the subject of Deity, proclaimed the plurality of Gods.” – Edward W. Tullidge
Matthew12:30; “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.”
So…
If you took Smith’s statement at face value, you’d be apt to think he had never preached about a triune god.
However…to dismantle that theory, all we have to do is open the Book of Mormon, (published in 1830) to see how he hasn’t told the truth.
Additionally, the heading for the chapter in the sermon listed above (Chapter 45, p. 492), states it came from his last sermon, the King Follett Discourse. This took place c. June 1844, less than two months before his death. Smith had been preaching for more than 14 years by that time. There’s a plethora of sites focusing on Smith’s gradual move towards polytheism.
When Smith initially came on the scene, he only preached about the Triune God of the Bible, but as time waned on he began introducing members to polytheism. While there’s a host of problems in the BoM, one of book’s main themes in its narrative is the doctrine of monotheism, and you don’t have to go far before you read the proclamation because it’s on the Title Page –
“And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God
Smith seems to be all over the board on this one, and unfortunately for members, he didn’t spend nearly enough time on the side of truth. Ever.
We’re wondering if we’ll ever find anything he said that has a grain of truth to his story. This is most disheartening for those who place their trust in such a man, while rejecting Christ Jesus who gave His very life for us all.
Don’t forget to pray!
With Love in Christ;
