Journal of Discourses 13:140; “I will say with regard to miracles, there is no such thing save to the ignorant—that is, there never was a result wrought out by God or by any of His creatures without there being a cause for it. There may be results, the causes of which we do not see or understand, and what we call miracles are no more than this—they are the results or effects of causes hidden from our understandings.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, July 11, 1869
John 2:11; “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
Wow. There doesn’t seem to be any end to Brigham Young’s attacks on God. Just when you think you’ve heard all the topics Mr. Young disagreed with, you’re sure to find more. I came across this one in the Journal of Discourses Index.
According to John’s gospel, Jesus performed His first miracle in Cana to manifest His glory. Now who’s going to argue this if you’re a true believer? And why?
The truth is that God’s word has recorded 37 of Jesus’ miracles. You can read them all in the article we wrote last year! How could the 20th miracle listed be from natural events? In the next few days we’ll be looking at Joe Smith’s attempt at tricking people into believing he could walk on water just like Jesus. It’s evident neither he, nor Brigham, had a great affinity for Jesus.
If you’re LDS, whom do you believe? Brigham, or God? Please know we’re not posting this to bash the Mormon people, rather, we do this to inform. You have the right to know what Mormon leaders have taught in order to make a comprehensive decision on the type of God you want to worship. We’re praying it’s Jesus – the God of the Bible.
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
One of satan’s means of deception is to instill doubt about the deity of Jesus. Sounds to me that in this quote Brigham is in disagreement with Joe.
While I’m no real fan of Brigham Young, I think you may be misinterpreting his words.
What he seems to be saying is that their is a cause behind every “miracle” that occurs. You assume this means “natural cause”, but I don’t see that in his statement. I could just as easily interpret the cause as being “God did it”, and then his statements would be brought into line with your own beliefs and their would be no disagreement.
Hi Voro,
“Mary’s son is God’s son. That he was conceived and begotten in the NORMAL way and NATURAL cause of events”.
Bruce R. McConkie 1966 Mormon Doctrine page 742
Maybe you’re a fan of McConkie…I can find more quotes from other LDS leaders if you’d like. I think we all know the “code” for “natural way”, or “of the flesh”. Sorry no miracle there.
To address another comment of yours, when you said “Christian blogs are often known to be critical of the LDS church”. So here’s the thing… Christians wouldn’t be critical if the LDS church didn’t claim to be Christian. Many LDS members would be critical of a church claiming to be LDS, or a restoration there of.
How do you feel about Denver Snuffer, or Christopher Nemelka, or, Chad Daybell… They all claim the mainstream Utah LDS sect presided by Russell M. Nelson is wrong, and so far removed from the original church founded by Smith. And they are telling people God chose them to restore it. Just like God the father and his son (depending which version you believe) told Joseph Smith not to join any of the Christian church’s because they’re ALL corrupt.
So you see Voro, if you really think about it, It was Smith who threw the first punch, we as Biblical Christians are merely defending what we’ve held dear for 2000 + years. There was no apostasy. Why? Because we’re still here. No restoration needed. People are accepting Jesus as there personal Lord and Savior all over the world right this second as we speak. They are being baptized in His Name. We’re billions strong and not going away.
I’m sure you don’t appreciate Snuffer, Nemelka,.Daybell and others,. trying to convince members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints, that their church is corrupt and to follow their teachings.
I hope you now understand why we’re critical. God commands us in Jude 3 to earnestly contend for the faith. We are called to look out for our brothers and sisters in Christ, that they may not be easily be mislead.
I appreciate your comment, Melissa
