Why are Mormons Told Not to Use God’s Name Too Much?

Doctrines of Salvation 1:16; “WHEN TO USE TITLE: “THE CHRIST.” The name Christ is a title comparable to the title Messiah and meaning The Anointed One, and has reference to the office of our Savior. If the remarks of a speaker have reference to the nature and calling of our Lord in the office which he holds, then the definite article preceding the name is in perfect order. However, when we are speaking of the Redeemer in some other sense than by reference to his official title, it is well for us not to use the article, but the whole name of our Lord, or, even better still, in order to avoid the too frequent repetition, we can say our Redeemer or Savior or the Lord.

According to Thy Faith, Ricks College Devotional, August 29, 2000; “Out of reverence and respect for the name of the Savior and to avoid the too frequent repetition of His name, please keep in mind that as I now use the word “faith” I am referring to the more accurate and complete phrase of “faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.”” – David A. Matthew 1:21; “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS…”

Philippians 2:10; “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth”.

We can see how church members have taken Mr. Smith’s words to heart. Almost fifty years later, Mormon leaders were still  quoting the admonition of their 10^th prophet. Even now, sixty years later, it’s a rare day when we hear a Mormon refer to the Lord by His given name, Jesus.

That said, however, we’re wondering why they do this.

The name of Jesus is used 983 times in the Bible! Two of the most important times it’s used is seen in our Bible verses above. And lest we forget, Acts 4:12 tells us there’s no other name under heaven by which we are saved.

It sounds like the Church doesn’t want members to use Jesus’ name because it reminds us His name has power to save, and power to make us humble all at the same time, and that’s something the Church can’t afford to give up.

It makes one wonder if they think God used His name too much in His word!

When you’re around a Mormon, don’t hesitate to use His name frequently!
