January 14 — Astrology. You’ll find a host of many rules for Mormons written in encyclopedic works like Mormon Doctrine & Encyclopedia of Mormonism. However, the everyday Mormon rarely follows what they say, if they’ve even heard of them. Occult activities is a classic example. Reading a horoscope is no big deal for most Mormons, and even Joe Smith was known for his strong reliance upon it. Mormon Portraits, p. 19. Ask the Mormon in your life if they’ve been told these things are condemned in the Bible!

Mormon Doctrine, p. 41 “Astrology…See ASTRONOMY, DIVINATION, FORTUNE TELLING, SORCERY. A form of divination and fortune telling akin to sorcery, astrology is a pseudo science that pretends to divulge the influence of the stars upon human affairs; it is a false science that claims to foretell earthly events by means of the positions and aspects of these heavenly luminaries. It is, of course, one of Satan’s substitutes for the true science of astronomy and for the true principle of receiving revelation of future events from divine sources.
Last year, during a High Priest Quorum meeting, we had one of the brethren assigned to lead that Sunday’s discussion. During the course of the meeting, he mentioned using a medium to contact his dead grandfather. He said that his grandfather was in the celestial kingdom and that he was able to do a lot of fishing, which was a pastime that the grandfather and this guy (discussion leader) used to enjoy doing together. What surprised me was that nobody spoke up and said anything. Of course, I was one of those guys that didn’t say anything. Honestly, up until that time, I had never heard any mention in church of any member using the occult. Joseph Smith used diving rods to find buried treasure and water, which always made me suspect of his character
This is so annoying. The New Testament is so thoroughly astrological in its content, Joseph Smith’s involvement seems to pale in comparison. Christianity has a rich magical history. You protestants are so hopelessly vanilla and judgmental, you can’t even see what’s in front of your own face.
I’m so sorry you’re annoyed, Anonymous…
But, Orthodox Biblical Christians get annoyed when Joseph Smith calls all creeds an abomination, and the whore of the earth etc…and trashes God’s Holy and prefect word (the Bible)… See 8th article of faith. Just so you know it’s satan who wants people to distrust the Bible.
The new testament really doesn’t talk much about astrology, actually. But what it does say in 1Thessalonians 5:22 to “Abstain from every form of evil”. There is actually more astrology mentioned in the old testament. Sorry but no! Christianity does not have a rich history with astrology. Yes people have always practiced astrology but not Christians with a good understanding of God’s Word know that it’s not something that pleases God.
Anonymous, the Bible mentions every sin there is…like murder, idolatry, lying, stealing, sexual immorality, blasphemy…but just because it’s in the Bible doesn’t mean God condones the sin.
If I’ve missed something in the new testament where Christians are practicing all this astrology etc. I sure would appreciate the verses to support your claims.
I look forward to your reply.
