Why I Believe the Book of Mormon to be the Word of God, pp. 4-5 “Now, once we become thoroughly convinced that the Book of Mormon is true, it will, as I have said solve any theological problem that may confront us. Do we want knowledge concerning God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost? We can get it in the Book of Mormon. Would we know concerning the pre-existence of spirits – the fall of man and the atonement – the principles and ordinances of the Gospel of Christ – the state in which spirits of men live between the time of death and the resurrection – we can find it in the Book of Mormon.” — William A. Morton, 1918
2 Peter 3:2 “That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour.”
William Morton (1866-1930) was a member of the Quorum of the Seventies,. He served in that capacity, as well as being a missionary director for several years and obviously knew Mormonism quite well.
While it may seem we’re digging for memoires of long forgotten figures, their stories are a picture of why Mormonism is what it is today. They’ve passed down the lies from one generation to the next until Mormons of the 21st century are parroting the same thing this guy said 100 yrs ago.
To date, the BoM is still bereft of Mr. Morton’s claims. The BoM doesn’t talk about the pre-existence, nor does it mention that men can become gods, or polygamy for salvation. And those are just a few of the things missing from their premiere canon.
I can remember as a little girl searching for anything that’d link my beloved BoM to the Bible. Whenever I’d ask a teacher for help I was always told the same thing. You haven’t studied it enough, and don’t worry about those things right now.
It’s heartbreaking to think of those who are going through the same thing today I went through 45+ yrs ago. They’ll never find the link connecting the Bible to the BoM because the latter doesn’t carry the tenets of true Mormonism.
The BoM doesn’t solve theological problems, it creates them.

It is not unusual in the Mormon church to listen to talks about the importance of scripture study and never hear the word Bible mentioned even once. I have listened, (bored out of my mind), to General Conference talks where certain General Authorities will talk on and on about the importance of the Book of Mormon and never once, mention the Bible. Typically, in the Mormon church, when the Bible is studied ,it is done by way of a lesson plan, developed by church authorities. I sometimes get the impression that the GAs don’t want people to study the Bible freely. They want members to study the Bible in a manner in which they dictate the direction of study.. Perhaps, they are afraid that people will come to realize that there is a big difference between the God of the Bible and the God of Joseph Smith.
Well the way they’ve cautioned members to fix their understanding on the BoM, it’s sadly true they are indeed afraid. I was just an ordinary, everyday member of the Church and did what they told me to do all the time.
Back then they told us to read our Bibles and I thought they were serious so that’s what I did. PTL that’s when their house of cards tumbled down in my life!

Mormons are taught (Articles 8 of Articles of Faith), that the Bible is not reliable because it has been tainted through so many translations. I stood in front of the congregation one Fast And Testimony Sunday and asked everybody “do you believe God loves you?” Hand were all raised. I then sais, “if you believe God loves you, why do you think he woulod give you a faulty set of scriptures to do battle with the devil/” When Jesus was in the hills for forty days and forty nights, fasting, he was approached by the devil. Every time the devil would tempt Jesus , he would recite scripture (‘It is written, it is written”). If the Word of God was Jesus choice of weapon in doing battle with Satan, it should be our choice of weapons as well. Would God give us a weapon (Bible) that was faulty when doing spiritual warfare with Satan?
That’s awesome Soldiermp! Hopefully they didn’t shut you down before you finished. I promise you someone was listening. Which kinda makes you wonder how many saints sit there week after week wanting to get up and say something.
The only one who doesn’t want us to trust the Bible is Satan himself.
God is almighty…His Holy Word endures forever.
By publicly professing to their Bishop, they agree with the 8th article faith believes in a different god, or in this case gods.
