Doctrine and Covenants 132: Intro, 52 “Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant and the principle of plural marriage. 52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, receive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph….” [emp. added]
Jeremiah 31:31 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah.”
Hosea 2:19 “And I will betroth thee unto me for ever…”
Today we’re looking at the infamous revelation Joseph Smith used as an excuse for his philandering ways.
While students of Mormonism know this revelation quite well, we’re looking at the way this was written in an attempt to bring attention to historical facts so members of the Church will give pause to its wording. It’s quite common for all of us to quickly read over the text of something, and not catch the true meaning of what we just read.
Furthermore, the Church would have to toss what the Bible says about covenants if they’re going to accept Smith’s ‘new and everlasting covenant’ of sex for salvation. The two verses we’ve used above are a microcosm of what our Lord has said throughout history. The entire Bible is a story filled with descriptive language of God’s redeeming love for mankind. All of it points to one subject matter – Christ Jesus.
Think about this –
More than 200 years spanned the time of God’s promise of our betrothal to Him in Hosea, to His promise of a new covenant in Jeremiah. During that time man still looked to God for the Promised Messiah, and His word never deviated. Yet, along comes Joe Smith and all bets are off when God supposedly changed His entire game plan…
The intro for this so-called revelation is dated July 12, 1843. By that time Joseph Smith had 40+ wives. The Church now admits Smith was practicing polygamy as early as 1831.
The intro also states Smith was given this revelation in Nauvoo.
Smith didn’t move to Nauvoo until 1839-1840, and was living in adultery from the days of Kirtland, OH back in 1831. Why was he practicing polygamy before God issued the directive to do so?
Also – notice the tense of this revelation where it said, ‘..let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, receive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph…’
In other words, This was already a done deal, long before God supposedly announced the extracurricular activities. It also indicates Emma didn’t have any choice in the matter. She was told to accept Smith’s adulterous behavior or she’d go to hell (v. 4).
We’re praying Mormons will see the disparity in this not-so-new revelation of sex for salvation, and know this is not how the God of the Bible operates.
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
As an exmormon, I timidly read your posts because each one makes me so angry that the church continues to get away with its lies. I believed them before there was the internet. Seems to me now, there is no excuse to follow blindly. I keep reading your well written, well researched work…..but my BP always goes up. Thanks for the what you do. I may be able to answer some questions more clearly if a wondering Mormon crosses my path.
Oh Sandra how our hearts go out to you!
I can relate to where you’re coming from and know the frustration all too well.I had to allow the Lord to remind me daily of Ephesians 6:11-12 – this isn’t about flesh and blood but the powers and principalities of the air.
I know many Mormons who were/are very intelligent and I could never understand how they couldn’t figure this out.
Ron Carlson took me aside one day and reminded me that it has nothing to do w/ intelligence. He also told me to memorize and pray 1 Jn 4:4 which says Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
It’s a lot easier said than done, but I kept praying this and asked Him to take away any and all anger – It worked and He healed my heart from having all those lies being piled one upon another.
He’s an awesome God and does miraculous things as you already know! I’m certain I’m preaching to the choir when telling you this! 😉
Thank you. I will try to pray that way. Many of my family members continue to believe and are excited when a new ‘revelation’ is delivered. I do not see how any of the changes in Mormonism relate to the Savior in any way.
Joseph Smith was quite the con man. He knew that what he was teaching was often contrary to the Bible. So, he comes up with the 8th Article of Faith ,which says that we believe in the Bible only so far as it has been translated correctly. Then Joseph reveals, that God has appointed him to translate the Bible in the correct form. Thus, we have Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible. In Revelation 22:18,19, the Lord warns of people that would add to or take away from his Holy Word. As I have said previously, if Joseph Smith’s followers had been familiar with scripture, they would not have been so easily mislead. Even today, most Mormons are not well read in the Bible. They are encouraged to read the Book of Mormon everyday and to make scripture study in the BOM an integral part of their family life. Whenever they do study the Bible, it is always in accordance with some lesson plan that has been devised by somebody in Salt Lake.
Rev. 22:18-19 only applies to the book of Revelation, not the rest of Scripture. Even Mormons know this and refute those who use it to say Smith can’t add.
IF you use Rev 22:18-19 with other passages to demonstrate God’s attitude about adding or subtracting from His Word, then you’re good to go. (Others are Deut. 4:2; 12:32; Prov. 30:5-6; 1 Cor. 4:6, e.g.)
D&C 132 was nothing but a cover-up for Smith’s serial adultery.
