Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p 264
“In addition to the spiritual manifestations already mentioned as having occurred at this conference of June 3rd-6th, it should be said that, according to John Whitmer’s History of the Church, ch. v: “The Spirit of the Lord fell upon Joseph in an unusual manner, and he prophesied that John the Revelator was then among the Ten Tribes of Israel who had been led away by Salmanasser, king of Assyria, to prepare them for their return from their long dispersion, to again possess the land of their fathers. He prophesied many more things that I have not written.” (HC 1:176.)”.
Matthew 4:20-22 “And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. 21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.”
False teachings like this serve as a good example why there’s confusion in the minds of many Mormons. As you can clearly see from the biblical passage above, John the Apostle lived at the time of Jesus. The Assyrian takeover took place c. BC 700.
How could John be at both places? That must’ve been some ‘revelation’ Joe had that day…
When I left the Church I wasn’t sure if John the Baptist, and John the Apostle was the same person or not. Making matters worse, I didn’t know where in the Bible to look for the info.
Likewise, I had also been taught that Noah was Gabriel, and Adam was Michael the archangel, as well as the Ancient of Days.
Please, be sure to share the proper information with a Mormon in your life!

Confusion has always been a hallmark of Mormonism. This is why they rely so much on the words of their General Authorities to guide them. Remember, the Mormon church has always relied on the Imagination of Joseph Smith to guide them, God warns us about such practices in 2 Corinthians 10:5)
This is the first time I’ve seen this. Hilarious! Thanks for the exposure of this nonsense.
Michelle, you misread the statement about John the Apostle in the midst of the 10 tribes–likely due to missing punctuation. Joseph Smith was saying that John was among the 10 tribes at the time of Joseph’s prophecy (1830ish), not in the 8th century. Also, it appears, as a LDS, you didn’t study the Bible to know the difference between John the Baptist and John the Apostle. Over 47 years ago, I became a member when I was almost 20. There has never been any confusion in any LDS sanctioned printed material about the identity of the two servants of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Terry is right, that’s a misread statement about John the Apostle. Part of John “not dying” is found in John 21, specifically verses 22-24, also Luke 9 verse 27. There’s some pretty awesome prophecies about John and the lost ten tribes of Israel returning during the reign of the last days Antichrist that are awesome! Valley of dry bones that Ezekiel talks about, ships of chittem that Danial talks about, John’s little book he eats in Revelation chapter 10, The lord and his weapons of indignation in Isaiah 10, etc. Anyway, I’m sure by how your post was written, you don’t really care or want to know.
I wonder who has the responsibility to figure out if John the Baptist or John the Apostle were the same person or not? You not giving an effort to read the scriptures and be taught through the spirit doesn’t put the responsibility on anyone’s shoulders but yours. I hear comments like that occasionally. “I was in the church for x amount of years and I never was told that salvation comes through Christ, I was never told that there were two Johns”. That’s such garbage. That’s no ones fault but the lazy person who expects to be spoon fed all things necessary for their spiritual growth. Maybe we need to give some effort and pick up our cross and follow Christ as he asked us to do. Give me a break.
This article is a classic example of someone who let go or never really got a grasp on the iron rod which is the word described by nephi in his vision in the book of Mormon. Left to the mist of darkness which is the temptations of the world, this person fell into strange paths and left the true Church.
John the revelator has been translated like the 3 nephites for a special mission in preparing the 10 tribes for their journey to Zion and eventual return to the land that they inherited originally. . In Zion they will be crowned with glory and receive the greater blessings by the children of Ephraim (D&C 133:32-34). Hint children of Ephraim are gathered to Zion first…that’s us. Once they are purified by the Lord himself, 12 thousand are selected from each tribe to become the 144,000. Christ’s army to help continue his work. Johns mission is helping them to prepare themselves to come to Zion. Our mission as children of Ephraim is to prepare to redeem Zion by becoming sanctified. 10 tribes won’t come unless they got a place to come to. Joseph Smith prophecies 100% still in tact.
Come back to church so I can slap you and then give you a hug and say “come on brother or sister, let’s prepare ourselves for the redemption of Zion.
Ah, the LDS defenders who don’t even know the falsity of they own faith. The entire Book of Mormon is a fraud, and part plagiarism from the KJV Bible! The LDS faith has so many contradictions it’s hard to find non-contradictory information. Even the “First Vision” has so many versions with so many contradictions that any discerning and unbiased person would see just that issue as proving that Smith was a liar and a fraud.
