‘For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.’ 2 Corinthians 11:13-14
Today and tomorrow, we’ll be looking at an article in the latest Liahona on how the Lord introduced the Mormon gospel.
This article was a reminder of why all Christians should be on alert about Mormonism. The open display of rebellion was heartbreaking.
To read their article in full, see Liahona, ‘What Did Moroni Teach Joseph Smith?’, January 2021. Our purpose in doing this is to compare what they’ve said to what God has revealed in His word.
To be sure, the origins of the LDS Church are far removed from how biblical Christianity began. The Church traces its beginning to one person: Joseph Smith, whereas Christianity traces its roots to God’s relationship with His creation.
The focus of their article was to show the numerous times Moroni was seen floating in the air with the message there existed ‘Another Testament of Jesus Christ’. This new and updated gospel included God’s pronouncement He thought the bride of Christ was nothing more than the ‘whore of Babylon’.
Today we’re looking at lies #1-5, and tomorrow lies #6-10.
#1 — Witchcraft.
‘On September 21, 1823, Joseph Smith prayed for forgiveness of his sins and to know his standing before God’.
Aside from the obvious lie listed above that Christianity is the whore of Babylon, a major problem in this scenario is timing.
Joe’s family was known to practice witchcraft, and this Moroni fellow showed up on the Autumnal Equinox. This ‘just so happens’ to be the time when witches gather to give thanks to Mother Earth.
#2 — Necromancy.
‘As Joseph prayed, a light filled his room and he saw an angel standing in the air. The angel called Joseph by name and introduced himself as Moroni.’
The problem with this story is necromancy. Moroni died c. 421 AD which means he’s not an angel from God, but a familiar spirit. A similar story took place with King Saul and the witch of Endor in 1 Samuel 28:12-13, also see Leviticus 19:31.
#3 — No Authority.
‘He [Moroni] told Joseph that he was forgiven and that God had a work for him to do.’
Only God has the authority to forgive sins – Mark 2:7, Micah 7:18, Isaiah 43:25, Exodus 34:6-7.
#4 — No Proof.
‘As Joseph prayed, a light filled his room and he saw an angel standing in the air…’
The article states Moroni visited Joseph Smith during the night, and his presence lit up the room as if it were noontime.
Problem: Joseph Smith and his five brothers shared two twin-sized beds in one small bedroom. No one but Joseph saw or heard anything during Moroni’s visit. See Moroni’s Magical Manifestations for more info.
#5 — Ill-Gotten ‘Fame’ Unfulfilled.
‘Moroni told Joseph that his name would “be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues” (Joseph Smith—History 1:33).’ [emp. added]
Almost 200 years have come and gone since Moroni supposedly made that claim, yet Joseph Smith’s name is still unknown to most of the world. Furthermore, this seems to be a badge of honor which it is not.
Please, pray for people to question the Church’s lies, and for Jesus to intervene! Tomorrow we’re looking at the other five lies, so be sure you ask the Mormon you know what they think of their church’s article.
With Love in Christ –
Michelle
