In 90 AD, the Apostle John gave us the definition for antichrist.
1 John 2:18-19; “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists, whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.”
An antichrist is the spirit of rejecting the Messiah. As noted above in 1 John 2:18-19, he expounded further on this, but in vs. 22 he was quite specific by stating, ‘Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.’ [emp. mine]
As we read through John’s first epistle we can find several ways he’s defined the term ‘antichrist’. A short list of antichrist characteristics includes denying Jesus’ virgin birth, not accepting He is fully God, not believing in the resurrection, or that He is the Messiah.
To be clear, one doesn’t have to qualify for each example to be an antichrist! Ascribing to just one or more of these heresies, qualifies you as an antichrist.
Mr. Young’s admonition to the Saints is a classic example of what John was talking about. Moreover, Brigham and other LDS leaders including Joseph Smith, have always denied Jesus is God, and denied He was born of a virgin.
