Liahona, ‘The Promised Messiah,’ December 2022 “During His ministry, Jesus made no distinction between rich and poor, male and female, young and old, healthy and infirm. He did not shun those of different faiths or cultural backgrounds. He loved everyone. He loves everyone. … A popular Christmas carol implores, “O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel.”
We may not be captive in Egypt or Babylon, as were the ancient Israelites, but we are captive nonetheless—captive to sin and death. And like Israel of old, we hope for deliverance. The birth of “a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11) heralded the fulfillment of that hope. That is why we sing of Bethlehem, “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” …
Speaking messianically, Isaiah said, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound” (Isaiah 61:1; emphasis added).
You remember that as He began His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ read those words in a synagogue in Nazareth. Then He declared, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” (Luke 4:21). Because the Christ child became the Messiah who magnified His ministry and mission by doing the will of the Father, He delivers us from spiritual and physical death.
“He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.” — Henry B. Eyring
Luke 2:11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Today we’re looking at part of an article Henry Eyring wrote for the December 2022 edition of Liahona. To read it in full see link above.
While the bible verses he quoted were legit, the truth behind using them is disingenuous at best.
There was nothing in any of the Bible verses Eyring rattled off that are true in the doctrines of Mormonism.
For the record before we look at Mr. Eyring’s lies…
The ‘Christ child’ did not become the Messiah. He was born as the Messiah.
Here are just some of the lies Eyring told…
1.People of Different Faiths —
The Mormon Jesus doesn’t accept anyone of other faiths. Joe Smith claimed God told him not to join any church because they’re all wrong.
JS History1:19 “I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.””
2.Racist Teachings —
Although the Church published a declaration in 1978 declaring people of color could hold the priesthood, their canon still exhibits their racist ideologies. The Jesus of Mormonism is not the Messiah Eyring spoke of.
Doctrines of the LDS Church are notoriously racist. The two links below are examples of how Eyring lied.
Book of Mormon Racist Teachings
Racist Remarks by Leaders in the Church
3.Bethelehem v. Jerusalem —
Eyring said they sing songs about Jesus being from Bethlehem but the BoM declares their Jesus hails from Jerusalem, not Bethlehem.
Alma 7:10 “And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.”
4.Emmanuel —
Everything in Mormon theology contradicts what Mr. Eyring said. The Jesus of Mormonism is not the Emmanuel of the Bible. The Emmanuel of the Bible is God incarnate. Mormons do not believe Jesus is God.
See Mormon Jesus for 60 LDS references showing how the Jesus of Mormonism is not the Jesus of the Bible. This is in the Godhead of Mormonism category.
5.Fulfilled Scripture —
Mormons do not believe Jesus fulfilled scripture as it says in Isaiah and Luke’s gospel that Mr. Eyring claimed. Mormons are only saved after all they can do as it says in 2 Nephi 25:23. Furthermore, they have a hard time accepting the Bible has been translated correctly. Articles of Faith 1:8
Luke 4:18-21 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
Isaiah 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.”
6.Finally beloved, the Jesus of Mormonism is not the Jesus of the Bible because their Jesus became a created being when their god had sex with Mary. See What Do Mormons Think of the Virgin Mary? for more info.
Please, pray for those who read the lies this man told and research the bible verses he used!
With Love in Christ —
