The story of Moroni goes hand in hand with anything to do with Joseph Smith. If there’s no Moroni, there’s no restoration of the gospel and no first vision. Ahh, but the story of the first vision includes the lesser know version that Nephi, not Moroni, showed up to tell Joseph about the restoration.
Atop every Mormon temple today sits a golden statue of Moroni, the angel of light. Typically he always faces east so he can herald in the second coming of Christ. Back in the early days of Mormonism Moroni was depicted as an angel vertically flying through the air with trumpet in hand announcing the newly restored gospel. Today he looks like a young kid sporting a baseball cap and a bugle.
Our personal opinions about Moroni don’t count for much in the long run, but what does count is God’s opinion and that’s been our focus here at LAM. Who was Moroni, where did he come from and what does it mean for you and me? These are the questions we all need to ask ourselves so we can determine if this is from God.
When witnessing to your Mormon friends (or if you’re LDS) ask for their opinion when it comes to Moroni. Is it okay that Joseph was talking to dead people? Is it okay for you to talk to dead people?
Seriously, if you’re LDS take a few moments out of your day and privately ask yourself those questions. No one has to know your thoughts and you need to know it’s not a sin to research and think things through. Some of the earliest Christians looked into the claims made by Peter, Paul and the other apostles before they accepted their stories. Imagine – these people were studious, righteous Jews and they stopped to check up on the claims made by someone like Peter! Acts 17:10-12.
The Church hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about which angel appeared to Smith in 1823.
