Suicide has been a huge problem in Utah for decades now, with the CDC labeling it as an epidemic. We began reporting on this in 2004 and every other year we produce the latest stats on Utah’s vitals with suicide being our main focus.
Being a native of Utah, seeing rates like this breaks my heart. While there are many factors that make up the reason for each suicide it’s been noted by many there’s typically an underlying factor in many of the lives that have been lost. Mormonism. Utah youth suicide has skyrocketed. From 2011-2015 it rose an alarming 136%. The numbers are still climbing in the example of one year at Herriman High School with 7 suicides for the 2017-2018 school year.
