AS GOD IS, MAN MAY BECOME
Dear Mormons, do you know the the nature of God? Can you put into your words what God is really like to you? Odds are if we asked you to describe the nature of God your answer would be what you have long been taught to say; “God is a God of Flesh and Bone.”
However, Moroni 8:18 reads, “For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.” Now modern Mormon doctrine teaches that God was once a man. Originally introduced by Lorenzo Snow, but that which has been taught throughout Mormon history and even by past Mormon President and ‘Prophet,’ Hinckley, is indentified by what Hinckley calls a “little couplet,” but reads more like a doctrine:
“As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become.” Hence the “God makers” label that Mormons loath. The thought is so widely taught as doctrine, if the phrase has not been canonized, the idea certainly has. See D&C 130. So the question is this:
Do Mormons believe the Book of Mormon, which is widely taught by them to be the most correct book ever written, or do they believe their own doctrine that differs with it?
If according to the Book of Mormon, God never changes, but is consistently taught by the church that He does change, where does that leave the individual member?
