Posts Tagged ‘cults’

In Mormon Doctrine, pp. 174 & 699, Bruce McConkie defined a cult as “sects”.

Under the sects section it says; “See APOSTASY, CHRISTIANITY,CREEDS, FIRST VISION, HARLOTS. Division and dissension, contention, confusion and discord — these are among the prevailing characteristics of the sects of Christendom.” (more…)

Mormon Decisions 10Today we’re doing things a little differently! Woo-hoo!

To start off with, let’s take a look at what God tells us through His prophet Isaiah about putting our trust in Him.

Isaiah 12:2; “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.”

That one verse would put an end to all the ‘isms’ in the world if we’d just heed what it says.

Mormon Decisions 10Trends in LDS Church Growth; “This treatise illustrates the folly of neglecting the word of the Lord in the Doctrine and Covenants concerning the need for investigators to make themselves ready for baptism. There are more active Jehovah’s Witnesses in the countries of Georgia or Armenia than active Latter-day Saints in all of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Russia together. There are less than 100,000 active Latter-day Saints in all of Europe, including the United Kingdom. In comparison, there are over 1.4 million proselytizing Jehovah’s Witnesses in Europe, and 2.7 million who attend Jehovah’s Witness conferences.

Mission policies are highly heterogeneous, yet much of the LDS retention problem stems from missionary approaches that emphasize quick baptism, often at the expense of the conversion process. Most individuals have read very little in the Book of Mormon at the time of baptism and have been to church only once or twice. Not surprisingly, one-year retention in most missions church-wide is below 40% …”

Ed DeckerI’ve been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks now so before more time slips away from me I’m posting Ed’s newsletter today!

I found that his section on the Hindus at BYU was rather interesting in light of the festival that was recently held in Spanish Fork. The Utah Hindu Fest held earlier this year had its largest attendance ever and BYU students made up the largest portion of attendees. Sadly, Utah holds the title for hosting the largest Hindu fests in the nation.  Nice.

Be sure you check out the great insights Ed had in his latest newsletter!

While we’ve been busy at the ministry there’s also a lot that’s been going on in the private lives at LAM!

Some good things, some not so good things and everything in between.  Wow!

And then out of the blue I received a surprise phone call at 9:30 pm last Sunday evening that surprised even me.

pentagramI’m posting this chart in response to the many e-mails I receive asking for definitions on Witchcraft, Satanism and Mormonism. This chart is part of a PowerPoint presentation I use when I’m asked to lecture at churches and schools.

This chart doesn’t include the side-by-side examples of Mormon beliefs, but you can download a chart for that here. It’s called Handouts for Witnessing. Between all the Mormon scriptures, Witchcraft and Satanism you’ll be prepared in knowing how to defend your faith with the Bible & see why God abhors worshiping anyone or anything but Him!

Why the LDS Church is True

(According to an e-mail I received)

While I receive many e-mails for the ministry, one that caught my attention the most came from a Mormon a while back by the name of Shane.  In his 15 page defense of the Church, a common theme ran throughout which has prompted this reply. I still use this e-mail as a response to other Mormons who write in with the exact copy & paste reasons the Church is true.

This Mormon took it upon himself to copy and paste a large section from the LDS website to let us know why the Church is true.

As the Christian will see, the reasoning he employs is lacking in spiritual maturity by using their (the LDS) defense.  His spiritual condition doesn’t promote ridicule on our part, but once again begs for empathy from those of us who’ve walked the same path.  It saddens me he can’t or won’t stop long enough to compile his own reasons for trusting the LDS Church.  Instead it’s a copy and paste world in the minds of many Mormons.  The way he responded also reminds me of a common response we see with many Mormons.

For instance, when asked where the proof is that someone like Nephi existed they’ll ask what proof there is the apostles existed. Instead of answering the question with definitive answer about Nephi, they attack the Bible.

God the Father

http://www.lds.org/study/topics/god-the-father?lang=eng; “God the Father is the Supreme Being in whom we believe and whom we worship. He is the ultimate Creator, Ruler, and Preserver of all things. He is perfect, has all power, and knows all things. He “has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” (D&C 130:22).”

Broken Promises

2 Nephi 31:3; “For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.”

Christianity Corrupt as Hell

John Taylor, Journal of Discourses 6:167; There is not nation now that acknowledges that hand of God; there is not a king, potentate, nor ruler that acknowledges his jurisdiction. We talk about Christianity, but it is a perfect pack of nonsense. Men talk about civilization; but I do not want to say much about that, for I have seen enough of it. Myself and hundreds of the Elders around me have seen its pomp, parade, and glory; and what is it? It is a sounding brass and a tinkling symbol; it is as corrupt as hell; and the Devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work that the Christianity of the nineteenth century.

AS GOD IS, MAN MAY BECOME
Dear Mormons, do you know the the nature of God? Can you put into your words what God is really like to you?  Odds are if we asked you to describe the nature of God your answer would be what you have long been taught to say; “God is a God of Flesh and Bone.”
