Polygamy Condemned in Book of Mormon
Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”
We have to ask…what went wrong? Why didn’t Joseph Smith heed the warnings of the prophets he wrote about?
And why didn’t the other Mormon leaders follow God’s counsel?
According to the Nauvoo Demographic Report, pg 29, written and compiled by George A. Smith polygamy ran rampant. He said; “In Nauvoo there were fifty-six polygamous marriages in 1845 and 255 in 1846”.
Why would these “godly” men believe it’s okay? The result of this behavior is wrong on so many levels I’d be here forever listing them all but just a few of them are; suicide, incest, demoralizing, humiliating, jealousy, low self-esteem, adultery, untrusting of others, numbness to feelings of love, loneliness, resentment, anger…
If those outcomes aren’t enough to deter someone from practicing polygamy then I suppose nothing would. The above examples are hardly the fruits of the Spirit but they’re obviously the fruits of Mormonism.
