Mormon Dilemma 606

Overcoming the World

D&C 64:2; “For verily I say unto you, I will that ye should overcome the world; wherefore I will have compassion upon you.”

1 John 4:4; “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

John 16:33; “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

We overcome the world through the power of the Holy Spirit that resides inside of us. We don’t overcome the world just because we belong to a certain organization and it’s impossible to overcome the world through Mormonism!

1. The Holy Ghost of Mormonism doesn’t reside inside the believer so when this “scripture” says the Mormon god wants for you to overcome the world that would have to mean you’re on your own. Brigham Young said if the Holy Ghost resided inside of people it’d be dangerous to give them the Holy Ghost because he might impregnate females! – Journal of Discourses 1:51.

2. The Holy Ghost of Mormonism isn’t omnipresent so the promise in D&C is impossible to fulfill because he can’t promise he’ll be there when/if you need him. D&C 130:22-23.

3. The Holy Ghost of Mormonism isn’t omnipotent so he’s not going to be able to help in all situations. He only has the ability to influence people much like the sun in the sky has influence.

4. There are two comforters in Mormonism. One is the actual Holy Ghost who’s still waiting around for a body (Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings, pg 321) and the other is the Light of Christ – D&C 88:3-7. This Holy Ghost has no other effect than giving “pure intelligence”. – Discourses of Joseph Smith, pg 42-43.
