Sanctification
Journal of Discourses, 10:173; “I will put my own definition to the term sanctification, and say it consists in overcoming every sin and bringing all into subjection to the law of Christ. God has placed in us a pure spirit; when this reigns predominant, without let or hindrance, and triumphs over the flesh and rules and governs and controls as the Lord controls the heavens and the earth, this I call the blessing of sanctification” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, May 24, 1863
2 Thess. 2:13; “But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.”
John 17:17; “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
These two simple verses tell us what we need to know to be sanctified in our minds and spirits. We need to study His word and then allow His Holy Spirit to minister to us as we implement His word into our daily lives. When we resist Him and/or doubt the Lord we’ve made it impossible for Him to work in us because this is rejection of the Lord.
And placing your own definition to these things is rejection! If you don’t believe you’re born a sinner and believe that you have a pure spirit you’ve already rejected Him. The “pure spirit” Mr. Young is speaking of in this passage isn’t the Holy Spirit because Mormons don’t believe the Holy Spirit indwells the believer.
