Investigate the Church

J. Reuben Clark: The Church Years (Provo, Utah: Brigham Young University Press, 1983), p. 24; “If we have the truth, it cannot be harmed by investigation. If we have not the truth, it ought to be harmed.” — J. Reuben Clark as Quoted by D. Michael Quinn

Acts 17:11; “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

Mr. Clark’s words sound honorable don’t they?

The problem here is the Church acts as if they’re made of Teflon. The conscience of the leadership is impervious to any moral aptitude God instilled in each of us as they continue to putz along just as they’ve always done. This wasn’t the first time they announced such high ideals for a public show and as we’ve seen throughout their history, it wasn’t the last.

The bully on the playground always makes a show of his bravado, coaxing and almost begging others to show him up. Ironically, every time someone takes him up on the offer, he’s a no-show.

They won’t accept correction, they’ve refused to believe Joe Smith was anything other than what he claimed to be, and they point accusatory fingers at others for being intolerant. I don’t say these things as generalities, the list is long and deep filled with historical accounts of people who have tried to intervene since 1830.
