Uchtdorf: We Can’t Earn Our Way Into Heaven

General Conference, April 2015, “The Gift of Grace”; “A powerful expression of [Christ’s] love is what the scriptures often call the grace of God…We cannot earn our way into heaven; the demands of justice stand as a barrier, which we are powerless to overcome on our own.

But all is not lost.

The grace of God is our great and everlasting hope. …

But the grace of God does not merely restore us to our previous innocent state. If salvation means only erasing our mistakes and sins, then salvation—as wonderful as it is—does not fulfill the Father’s aspirations for us. His aim is much higher: He wants His sons and daughters to become like Him…It is by God’s amazing grace that His children can overcome the undercurrents and quicksands of the deceiver, rise above sin, and “are perfect[ed] in Christ” (Moroni 10:32).” – President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency

1 John 3:4; “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”

1.God’s grace did not and does not restore us to our former state. Before we were born nothing about us existed.

2.We’ve never been innocent, thus the need for the whole grace thing going on in the Bible.

3.I had to put my eyeballs back in their sockets after reading Mr. Uchtdorf’s comment ‘we cannot earn our way into heaven’.

Are you kidding me???

4.Why do they incessantly lie about their beliefs and at other times brazenly deny God’s holy written word? Why did this man say they can’t earn their way into heaven?

Which memo did I miss? Mormonism is a works for salvation based dogma, and in fact, prides itself on being so. Where did this new teaching come from?

5.The deceitfulness in the statement he made sends chills down my spine. Paraphrasing, he said if salvation means erasing past sins, then salvation doesn’t fulfill God’s aspirations for us.

Oh brother.

First of all, Jesus’ death on the cross and His shed blood doesn’t erase our sin. It covers them so we are justified before God. God isn’t some magician up there with a magic wand. Secondly, He mustn’t understand what true salvation is for or about.

God created a way for us to be saved through the death of His Son so we can spend eternity with Him. He provided the way. He provided the sacrifice needed to meet the demands of justice. He is the reason we can obtain salvation. He is God, always will be God, and has no plans on sharing His throne with anyone.

We can’t be ‘like him’ if Jesus said we’re going to be like angels in heaven – Mark 12:19-25.
