Are Adam and Michael One and the Same?

Today we’re exploring contradictions in Mormonism that teaches Michael the Archangel and Adam are the same personage. Sometimes this elusive Mormon character morphs himself into someone else, and at other times, well, they’re two separate people.

From a revelation given to Smith in August 1830 whilst in Harmony, Pennsylvania, Smith reported God gave him a laundry list of who’s who from the Bible that would help Smith carry out the new design of his kingdom.

Included in the long list would be Adam, aka, Michael the Archangel, aka, the Ancient of Days.

D&C 27:11“And also with Michael, or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days.”

From a revelation on 21 January 1836 recorded in Joseph Smith’s diary, Smith claims he saw Adam and Abraham and Michael…

“…I saw the beautiful streets of  that kingdom, which had the appearance  of being paved with gold— I saw father Adam, and Abraham and Michael…”

However…

In D&C 137:4-5 the reference to seeing Michael has been deleted.

“I saw the beautiful streets of that kingdom, which had the appearance of being paved with gold. 5 I saw Father Adam and Abraham and my father and my mother; my brother Alvin, that has long since slept.”

Another place we see the confusion between Michael and Adam is in the Mormon temple ceremonies where Michael is morphed into the first man, Adam.

Mormon Temple Endowment Ceremony;

THE CREATION OF ADAM

[Elohim, Jehovah, and Michael enter the Creation Room. Michael sits in a chair with his head on his chest, his eyes closed, as if he were lifeless.]

ELOHIM: Jehovah, see the earth that we have formed. There is no man to till and take care of it. We are here to form man in our own likeness and in our own image.

JEHOVAH: We will do so, Elohim.

[Elohim and Jehovah pass their hands in the air over Michael’s body, from head to foot.]

ELOHIM: Jehovah, man is now organized, and we will put into him his spirit, the breath of life, that he may become a living soul.

[Elohim and Jehovah lift Michael’s head into an upright position. He opens his eyes.]…

The last reference we have for the day comes from the Mormon apostle/apologist, Bruce R. McConkie. In his book Mormon Doctrine, p. 491 (p. 350 online version), we read the following description of all the roles of Michael the Archangel;

 “Michael the Archangel See ADAM, ANCIENT OF DAYS, BATTLE OF THE GREAT GOD, WAR IN HEAVEN. Our great prince, Michael, known in mortality as Adam, stands next to Christ in the eternal plan of salvation and progression. In pre-existence Michael was the most intelligent, powerful, and mighty spirit son of God, who was destined to come to this earth, excepting only the Firstborn, under whose direction and pursuant to whose counsel he worked. “He is the father of the human family, and presides over the spirits of all men.” (Teachings, p. 157.) The name Michael apparently, and with propriety, means one “who is like God.””

The most important thing to notice in all this is what isn’t mentioned. The Bible. There are no biblical examples of how this happened, or what God has to say about it in any of their descriptions and usages of Michael being morphed into Adam.
