Joseph Smith and Simon the Sorcerer Compared

Ensign, ‘Joseph Smith, the Mighty Prophet of the Restoration,’ May 1976, p. 94 “As to this man, Joseph Smith, let us say – Here is a man who was chosen before he was born, who was numbered with the noble and great in the councils of eternity before the foundations of this world were laid. “Along with Adam and Enoch and Noah and Abraham, he sat in council with the Gods when the plans were made to create an earth whereon the hosts of our Father’s children might dwell. “Under the direction of the Holy One and of Michael, who became the first man, he participated in the creative enterprises of the Father.” — Bruce R. McConkie

Acts 8:9-11, 18-19 “But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.”

The similarities between Simon the Sorcerer and Joseph Smith just can’t be ignored. Both were notorious charlatans of their day, and led people away from God, not to Him.

The big difference was when Simon asked Peter to pray he’d be forgiven.

Acts 8:20-24 “But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.”

Unfortunately, Mr. Smith never had the humility to engage in such a thing.

Furthermore, those around him missed God’s memo in Peter’s epistle about the younger generation submitting themselves, and being clothed in humility. If they had taken action on God’s warning, the world would be a much different place.

1 Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”

If those issues weren’t enough, there’s also the problem with their polytheistic beliefs (multiple gods). On top of that, we also see problems with believing in a premortal life, the Adam-God Theory, and Michael the Archangel is Adam.

How much more evidence is needed to show this isn’t from the God of the Bible?

Please, pray for Mormons to replace their adoration for Joseph with the Real Savior, Christ Jesus and Him crucified!

With Love in Christ;
