Comparing Joseph Smith to Christian Men

September 14 — This photo came up in one of the Christian Facebook groups I follow today. Many thoughts came to my mind when I saw it, thoughts that I don’t want to share in this article. Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, one thing that comes to my mind is the song some of us learned from Sesame Street, “One of these things is not like the other”.

Joseph Smith is nothing like the other two men he’s pictured with in this image. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Charlie Kirk were both Christians; they loved Jesus and wanted everyone to follow Him. Smith created his own Jesus, along with his own gospel, and wanted everyone to follow him. King’s and Kirk’s work has hopefully led many to Jesus Christ. While Smith’s work has led countless people to hell, far away from the real Jesus.

Martin Luther King Jr., and Charlie Kirk loved and respected everyone, no matter their skin color. Smith wrote a book that taught those with dark skin are godless and wicked, but if they would follow Mormonism, their skin would become lighter. In his book, The Book of Mormon, he literally called dark skin a curse.

I’ll never understand a Mormon’s need to put him into everything. They do this around Christmas by calling it Smithmas because his birthday happens to be December 23.

The Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith are the Mormons’ go-to topics and the first things they think about when tragedy occurs. As a Mormon, I was encouraged to share the Mormon gospel with those nonmembers who are mourning. I wasn’t taught to share Jesus with them or pray with them. I was to share what Joseph Smith did in “restoring the gospel” and how families can be together forever, thanks to Joseph Smith.

How I wish Jesus would be the first one they think about and desire to look to the Bible for comfort and encouragement.

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes
